For 1955
The Blend Shire Cofincilhas recom
mended a general rate oftTd in the £ «n
the UjC.V. of land within the shire for
1955. This represents the same rating in
the £ as has existed this year.
The councillors reached
| this decision at a special
meeting on Tuesday, when
the estimates were present
ed to the council by the
shire clerk, Mr. E. E. Han
nard.
Mr. Rannard did not recom
mend .an increase in the rate,
and the .council adopted his re
commendation.
In his report, Mr. Rannard
presented a detailed list of the
items of expenditure and in
come for the year.
Main items on the expendi
ture side for tie year were:—

BIG INCREASE -FOR SHIRE
ROADS
Cr. Lord asked why 'theire
was such a-trig increase In
the amount allocated for
shire roads, yvhlch Is £43,280
compared with an estimat
ed expenditure of £30,000
this year.
The shire engineer, Mr. C. H.
Martin, said he had budgeted,
for £42,500 -this year, but there
had been delays in obtaining
hew plant and all tbe work bad
not been carried out.
He said two of the plants
were now working double shift
and were costing £10 per .hay
to run,"- while the bulldozer
would also be working full
time this year,
Cr. Murrells: With the grader
doing double shift, we are .gett
ing twice as .much work?
Mr. Martin: Almost.
Cr. Murrells asked about tbe
increased travelling expenses
for health administration, an
amount of £800 being allocated'
.against An estimated expendi
ture of £600 this year. Mr. Ran-;

IMPROVEMENTS IN OFFICE

keeping the accounts in the
office, resulting in saving
of time in line with the
apdltpr's recommendations
in his report, and the pur
chasing of an addressing
machine would thus allow
the imembera of the office
to hpndle the work and
keep .it tip to date.
"One of the typists has sub
mitted her resignation as from
llecetpber 22, and applications
have been called for a typist to
.fill -.the position, and this will
result' in a Bavjng in -salary of
the typist.. The other typist has
also indicated -her intention to.
resign during the year, and a
further saving should be effect
ed there.
"The recent margins case
which was before the Arbitra
tion Court and which the pro
fessional staffs are seeking an
adjustment of their salaries
may increase :t)ie,above salaries
particularly the Shire Clerk's
salary. An amount of £100 has
been included to .cushion tills
increase if it comes about. . ,
