SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP.
WILDING DEFEATS WRIGHT.
LONDON. 29th June.
The final lieat in the competition for the
All England Lawn Tennis Singles Cham
pionship was contested yesterday between
A. F. Wilding (New Zealand) and Boalee
IV right (America).
In the early stages of the contest \Y right,
with liis swift rushes to the net, outplayed.
Wilding, and lie won the first two 6ets,
each at 6 — 4. Wilding, however, won the
third set, the score being (i — 3, and also thc
fourth set, G— 2. making the score two
games all.
Iii tlio concluding game Wilding's driv
ing to thc side lines and volleying proved ir
resistible. There were many exciting rallies,
but Wilding was steadier than his op
ponent, and he was victorious at 6 — 3:
Wilding's win was most popular, and lie
received uh ovation from tlie large attend
ance of spectators.
In tlie fourth roiind of thc Doubles Cham
pionship L. O. S. Poidcvin and S. N.
Doust (Now South Wales) beat 1'rebbleand
Barnes, 6—3, 6—2, 3—9, 6—3.
The last occasion on which Beals 'Wright
and Anthony Wilding met was in the his
toric challenge match between America and
Australasia, played in Melbourne, in
Novcriibor, 1908, when the American player
won at 3—6, 7 — 5, 0—3, 6 — 1. Wilding now
plays a challenge match against the present
holder of the All England Championship,
A. W. Gore, who is 15 years older than the
New Zcalander, but is still the acknow
ledged champion of base line play.
