Fleetwood—Smith Shines
Carlton Defeated; Richmond's
Strong Bid
PENNANT batsmen failed today on good wickets in perfect Weather.
Fleetwood-Smith (St..Kilda) took eight Carlton wickets for 41 at
St. Kilda, and V. Nagel (Melbourne) was another outstanding
botvler against North Melbourne, at Albert Ground.
Colts Stampeded
Collingtvood Too Strong
With Ryder playing in the intrastate
match, Collingwood fielded a substitute
in their match against the Colts today.
The Colts opened with Brereton and
Junor. Muir was the bowler. A. smart
return by Cosgrave from cover pomt
the wicket, and found E. Laurie out
the crease.
Accurate bowling and good fielding
slowed up the batting.
Junor was giving a good display. His
perfect placing between the fieldsmen
was a feature of the batting.
Better placing of the field between
point and third man would have saved
many runs. Junor was run out after
reaching the half-century. His promising
innings took 74 minutes, and Included
five boundaries.
The batting had become subdued with
silly point close up to the wicket. Marm
livened up and monopolised the scoring.
The batsmen were now running
smartly between the wickets. The bowling
was not impressive and various
changes had no effect. Mann and Connor
Sad Droved a valuable partnership,
and raised the hope of the Colt*.
They were together 77 minutM, and
added 81 runs to the total. McKelson
took a smart catch off his own bowling
In dismissing Connor.
Cosgrave was proving himself a
good all-rounder, and was bowling well
Mann was out to a good catch .by Monohan
at mid-off, and his dinmssal after
a fine innings was a disaster to ine
Colts.
