Enthusiastic
Middle Park Surfers
MATTERS are moving at the head-
quarters of the Middle Park Surf
Club. This year the members decided to
make sweeping changes in the personnel
of the office-bearers, and this has resulted
in a great renewal in the interest
of this club, which has been in exist-
ence since 1916.
The new president is Mr Arthur Rus-
sell, one of the foundation members of
the club, a prominent business man in
the city, who has been engaged in mov-
ing picture presentation from the busi-
ness for years, and who has
numerous other business interests. Ar-
Russell, who is well known in
swimming, world for his successes, took
the quarter-mile championship of the
State, and had many other wins. It
was Mr Russell who coached Ian Mac-
intyre, the winner of the Yarra three-
mile swim. He has now formed a staff
of expert swimmers at Middle Park Surf
Club, and these have taken over many
of both sexes whom they are teaching
to swim. Arthur Russell guarantees to
teach any non-swimmer in half an hour,
nd judging by his successes, this is no
idle boast.
FINANCIALLY STRONG
Financially the club is about one of
the soundest in Victoria. The funds
total about £250, most of which is in-
vested in Victorian Government Stock.
In addition, the club-rooms and the div-
ing platform, etc.are valued at about
£500. Many new members are signing
up and at a meeting on Monday night,
at which Mr Russell gave an entertain-
ing lecture to 43 members and prospec-
tive members on the rudiments of swim-
ming, fees received totalled several
pounds. The club has many swimmers
who should develop splendidly under
the coaching of Arthur Russell. A sur-
prisingly large number of these are ex-
public school boys. The club is also
noted for the number of journalists
it has among its members. These are
combining to produce a small, bright
surf club paper, which gives all the
M.P.S.C. news each week. They have
installed a £30 wireless set at the
club-shed.
The club's most prominent swimmers
comprise the Findlay brothers, Ian
Macintyre, A. Stuart, the Riall brothers,
Ern Tawton, Arthur Gibson, Arthur
Russell, L. Smith, Gus Russell, Bob
Chambers, and others. Many new swim-
mers are with the club this season and
several of these are expected to show
out in the various carnivals for which the
club enters its swimmers free. To meet
the times, fees have been reduced. These
are now: Men, 5'; women, 3'.
