A light shower fell just before the
start.
Melbourne were se\'en minutes late.
Moodie, Melbourne, won the toss from
Laver, and chose the Richmond goal,
favored by a south-westerly. Melbourne
found their feet at the bounce. A free
to Steele in the ruck, enable Melbourne
to hoist first score. Cassidy quickly followed
with first goal. Melbourne's big
men were all over Geelong in the air.

Riches and Lleweljyn quickly gave.
Geelong the lead. Geelong's centre line
was making itself felt, but Melbourne
were still superior in the packs. Gough
earned applause for a good run and
Melbourne rushed forward with good
team work.
Anderson brought the play along the
Jolimont wing and Coles added Geelong's
sixth goal. Geelong had effectively
countered Melbourne's extra
weight with speed and system.

Melbourne again opened with i
free in the centre.
Power marked well, and turned several
Geelong attacks. Geelong successfully
forced Melbourne into the pocket,
and took the edge off their attacks.
Lancaster led Geelong forward? but
Davidson and Collins relieved, and Lindsay
added sixth goal.
A splendid mark by S el wood gave
Geelong a chance. Gough and Smith
for the quarter on the bell.

At tlu-ee-quarter time Lindsay (Melbourne),
who had kicked five goals, was
replaced by Noseda. Turner reduced
Geelong's deficit to three points.
Stapleton relieved with a good mark.
Two Geelong men were receiving attention
from the trainers.
"Lancaster gave-MacKay a chance with
an open goal, but the shot went astray.
Adams broke through. A. Kelly snapped
a goal, putting Melbourne nine points
'tead.
Geelong made a last-minute attack,
-but were unequal to the task.
