Chatham Faces Great Task
Rivals To Fear in the Epsom
By "ONLOOKER"
WILL 9.10 be too heavy a burden for Windbag's doughty son. Chatham,
in thc Epsom Handicap? This is a much debated question in Sydney at
the moment.
Opinions arc divided, and. though wcight-for-age results
do not often definitely point to handicap winners, Chatham's two recent
succcsscs have been so brilliantly accomplished that
he has an undoubted
chance of following in the footsteps of Amounis
to win
his
second "Epsom."
His capacity to carry weight is well known, and if he can account
for
Sydney's 'leading three-year-olds. Blixten and Limarch, in Saturday's
Chelmsford Stakes, he certainly will be an outstanding candidate for
Randwick's £2000 mile event.

last Saturday's six furlongs Canterhur

Because of those achievements there are J
many who contend that it will take an i
exceptionally good horse to beat \
Chatham in the Epsom, despite his huge]

the pair met last spring, and as Winooka

Such reasoning is hardly logical, however.
In tlia autumn Winooka struck a

he was roundly acclaimed one rf the
greatest milcrs the Australian tuil has
produced.
BRONZE HAWK
PREFERRED
Chatham may win the Epsom for lb?

DAUGHTER OF VALICARE
Another probable runner on Saturday
will be Valicare's daughter. Carefree.

to whet the appetite of those who
fancy her for the Epscm. It was Carefrees
first run since June, when she
got up in thc last stride to win the
June Stakes ifi fur.) at Randwick from
Tom Pinch <9.7V She carried C.12 then.
As evidence of her amazing advance she
shouldered 8.9 on Saturday and was in
receiot of onlv 41b. from Tom Pinch
and 71b. from Chatham. In the Epsom
Chatham is set to concede her 331b..
and the magnitude of his task is very
apnarent.
