, A POLICE COURT INCIDENT.
'THAT'S SOON OVER."
"Richard Henry Phillips," called Sergeant
Turnbull at Richmond court ou Saturday. A
dilapidated looking Individual of middle age rose
from a scat, waved his hand, nnd beamed in
dulgently upon flic magistrates (Dr. Agnew and
Mr. J. Digby).
"iou are cnurgcu witn iiaving ucuaved in an
offensive manner in a public place," proceeded
tho sergeant severely.
Defendant: Oh, nol Am I how? Come, that's
good. (Laughter.)
Constable Dc la Rue: Y'cstcrday evening, at
about 7 o'clock, defendunt came along the street
iwithout a cont or waistcoat on. He had a
'blanket over his shoulders and a piece of rope
tied round his waist. ! asked him why he was
going About like that, and he said someone had
stolen his overcda-t. I then asked him what he
was doing with the rope, and he stated that he
was going to hang himself, and wanted a nice
looking policeman to pull 'the cud.. (Laughter.)
Mr. Dlgbv (to defendant): Any question?
Defendant: No, sir; only I know I ran not
guilty.
Dr. Aghew: Where do you come from?— From
Bunvood. I'm well known there, you know.
What wore you doing there?— Oh, gardening
and dairying. I've got £50 in thc Savings Bank
at Glcnfcrric; nlso a 6-roomed house, so -I'll give
something to the poor box. (Laughter.)
Mr. Digby: Remanded for seven days. .
'Defendant (while being led- from the court):
Oh, that's soon ' over. / Morning, gentlemen.
(Laughter.)
