True
Course
To
Beat
Flying Halo
By FRED EVEREST
Despite Flying Halo's impressive win in the
Merson Cooper Stakes, it's my opinion that he's no
"good thing" to beat the filly True Course in the
rich V.R.C. Sires' Produce Stakes at Flemington on
Saturday.
Flying Halo has certainly
done everything asked of him
to date and on his record he
must be classed, with Merry
Scout, as the top Melbourne
colt. His record la three wins
and two seconds from Ave
starts.
True Course has had three
wins and a second In four
Starts, and I would say that
he's the best of the Melbourne
illies — better than Slick Chick,
who finished third (beaten about
length) to Flying Halo In the
Merson Cooper. The VRC
andicapper must think so, too,
s in his handicaps for the
arch Nursery on Monday he's
iven True Course 9.3 and Slick
hick 9 0
Flying Halo wasn't nominted
for the March Nursery, but
erry Scout was, and he's been
allotted 9.7. Free Speech has
8.11, which means that, comared
with True Course, he's
91b. better off in the March
Nursery than in the Sires.'
Hundi and some of the others
till in the Sires' Produce are
ven better off in the Nursery.
If Hundl ran In the classic he'd
have to concede True Course
1b. In the March Nursery she
has to give him 101b., which
hows how good the handicaper
thinks she Is.
On Merson Cooper form. Flying
Halo should account for
Matterhorn and Aldershot. KLlng
Richard doesn't appeal at the
seven furlongs, and Galllvant's
form has been much too poor.
Plans to return Mighty Song
to Sydney have been changed,
and the filly is to run again In
the Sires'. She presents a real
puzzle for backers after her
failure In the Merson Cooper
Stakes. I've no doubt that If
full use ls made of her early
speed, and she Is not "held up"
as she was at Caulfield, she'll
give her backers a much better
run for their money. The catch
with her ls whether shell ran
the seven furlongs.
The distance won't worry
Free Speech and perhaps it
will prove wise to forgive him
his failure In the Trenton
Stakes at Caulfield. It couldn't
have been his true form because
he worked as well as ever since.
He did an outstanding gallop
on Saturday morning and he
impressed again yesterday
when he went better than the
boom colt, Hundl.
Free Speech was one of the
best colts in the Spring, winning
the Gwyn Nursery at
Caulfield and the Byron Moore
Stakes at Flemington.
