30,000 SEE FITZR
BEAT MAGPIES
BY A POINT
By CYRIL
NOTT
Fitxroy figured in another point victory today
when they snatched victory from the Magpies from
the last kick of the game before 30,000. It was a
hard, gruelling struggle in which the play failed to
reach a high standard but the evenness of the
scores kept the spectators in a pitch of excitement.
There was little between the teams but Codingwood's
inaccuracy in front in the final stages cost
them the game.

Collingwood replaced Ron.
Richards (knee injury) with S.
Smith, and Gale replaced
Nicholls in Pitzroy's team.
Collingwood opened with
lenty of dash, and a snap bv
E. Richards brought a point.
Smart work by the Magpies
centre line carried play forward.
and Moore goaled The
Maroon defence tightened to
turn further thrusts, and Ruthven
sparkled in a Maroon
breakaway.
The kicking was erratic,
players finding the cross-wind
troublesome. Miller, well out of
position, snapped Pitzroy's first
goal—Coates just missing soon
after.
The Maroons were forcing
Collingwood into the non-scoring
pocket, and it was some
time before L. Richards found
the opening. Running an extra
rover, Fitzroy settled down and.
playing the long game, went
into attack which carried them
to a six-points lead when Ruthven
and Collins goaled.
It was a quarter of hard, even
football, with little between the
teams, but the strong crosswind
had an upsetting effect
and players found conditions
difficult.
The second quarter opened
with both sides making bad
mistakes, Collingwood being
the. worst offender. The Magpie
defence, however, was equal
to the test and Fitzroy could
manage a point only from their
repeated thrusts.
Miller, playing wide of the
centre, found E. Hart with a
long punt and the first maior
for the quarter appeared. Play
was solid and at tunes willing,
but the standard was disappointing.
Collingwood met with
little success as they drove
forward, but something like
football was shown by the understanding
between Fitzgerald
and Moore for L. Richards
to goal.
Collingwood looked more impressive,
as they turned on a
burst of non-stop football to
add two goals, but there was
still little between the teams.
Quick thinking by Sales and
& flying mark by Dunstan
marked Collingwood's opening
break, but Johnstone was in
the way, and his kick carried
play to Smith (F), who snapped
full points. Mistakes were
6till plentiful and neither side
teemed able to settle down.
Collingwood twice broke clear
but were forced on to the outer
wing. A mark by Clay and a
more direct attack was more
successful for the Maroons, E.
Hart marking unattended and
raising Fitzroy's sixth goal.
Fitzroy did not hold this 10
points lead for long, Collingwood
streaking away through
Sales's * i good work, Stevens fintehing
it off with a remarkable
angle goal.
Keeping up the pressure, Collingwood
again drove forward,
and some neat passing ended
with Mclntyre goaling off the
ground.
Fitzroy shone in an exchange
of short passes, in which Kettle,
Ruthven and Hart participated,
but the shot went wide. Smith
made amends shortly after,
when he snapped a remarkable
go£l to regain the lead for the
Maroons.
A hectic quarter ended with
Fitzroy holding a slender three
points' lead at the final change
over.
Green outmarked the opposi-
tion to stem Pitzroy's opening
drive, and it became the
Maroons' turn to defend.
Neither side was able to crash
the defences, and play swung
from Mid to end until Stevens
broke clear of a fierce scrimmage
and goaled to put Collingwood.
ahead. Away again, and
Fitzgerald added a single to
put the Magpies four points
ahead.
Fitzroy were finding it diffi
cult to break clear as the Magpies
kept on ramming the ball
to their forwards, "valuable
singles gradually increasing
Collingwood's lead.
Fitzroy gained temporary relief,
but Hamilton marked, and
again Fitzroy were defending
Collins sparkled in a promising
Fitzroy move, but Green
was in the way. Smith initiated
the next move from which
Coates scored a single.
Splendid handball by Collingwood
carried them out of
danger and splendid marks by
Mann and Hamilton gave the
Magpies a chance, but Gale
intercepted a short pass which
opened a Fitzroy drive. This
fizzled out in the goalmouth,
Collingwood whisking the ball
out of danger. Fitzroy were
battling desperately to break
into the open, their efforts
finally being successfully when
Ruthven kicked on the ground
to E. Hart who ran into goal
just before the bell to give
Fitzroy victory by a point.
