'HOIBOS HAS EAST WIN
IN GUINEAS
By FRED
EVEREST
Few races for the Caulfield Guineas have
been won as easily as Phoibos captured the rich
race at Caulfield today. He beat the opposition
in a stride soon after turning into the straight
and cleared away to win by two and a half
lengths from Ellerslie, who defeated the Sydney
celt Riptide by half a neck for second.
"It was lus best performance i

teibos after the race. "I hh

Phoibos lias now won five of

Jarbon Copy, in the* Felmingan
classic. His stake winiugs

idelaide liotelkeeper, Mr P. J.

as a yearling far 1500

Gay Saint was a great disppointment,
failing to show
the early speed expected of
him, and merely holding his
place behind five or six others
in the run home.
After his good run to Royal
Gem on Show Day the Hoysted
stable expected Gay Saint
to thoroughly test Phoibos. but
at no stage did the colt
threaten danger, although he
did make a short-lived dash on
the outside of Phoibos passing

High Tar ran a fair race in

Derrymore, who had run
second to Phoibos in the Moonee
Valley Stakes, ran badly.
