MAGPIES IN LAST MINUTE
VICTORY

Thirty thousand spectators at Collingwood
saw a hard, even game in which the wind played
tricks with the ball. After Carlton had held Collingwood
to 1-3 in the third term, it appeared
that the Blues would win,, but Collingwood
finishe full of running and narrowly took a well-"
deserved victory.

Collingwood had first use of
a gusty wind and attacked.]
Three behinds were posted before
Richards shot the ball to
Mann for first goal. The Carlton
defence kept the ball on the
outer wing, from where it was
difficult to score. After Howell
goaled for the Blues. Collingwood
took charge and outgeneralled
Carlton to establish
a lor lead at the first change.
Long, driving kicks soon
brought two goals to Carlton,
but Collingwood fought back
with spirit. Collingwood had
one of their ruck men as an
extra defender and Carlton
found goals hard to get. It was
not good football, the players
made too many errors. Collingwood
crossed the centre only to
see hurried kicks go behind.
SIXTH GOAL
Baird goaled to make the difference
four points, but Carlton
could not get their play
runnine smoothly against a determined
Collingwood defence.
Davies raised sixth goal, but
CoMinewood prevented further
addition for the quarter.
Neither side showed outstanding
form in a rugged first half
Knowing Carlton had last use
of the wind, Collingwood
battled hard to build up a long
lead. Carlton suffered misfortune
when Henfry was Injured
and went to a forward pocket.
Twomey had shaded the Carlton
caDtain. Garby kicked accurately
for Carlton's seventh
The defenders of both teams
were outstanding. Fitzgerald
and Wade (Collingwood) and
Grieve and Brown <Carlton>
shining.
With the quarter almost over
the difference was only one
point. A compact, fast-moving
defence was the main factor
in holding Collingwood to one
