LAWRENCE HAS A FINE WIN IN
"MILLER MEMORIAL"
Juniors Beaten At Last

FOR the first time this season a veteran beat juniors in a V.A.C.U.
road race. On Saturday, Gordon Lawrence, Hawthorn's 30 year

y< annual "Miller Memorial" of 37 miles at
North Essendon. Bis win was the result of heady riding, and
his final dash was a sterling effort in a field that contained
many really brilliant juniors.

Lawrence has both assets. Be is some-!
things more than just a racing riderl
and secretary of a cycling club, as he
makes bikes as well, for touring and'
racing. Pew cyclists can claim to be I
so deep into their sport as Lawrence.
In the "Miller" he was oil lmln., and
out-rode the scratch men. He has been
riding since he was 16 when he was with '
Malvern. He won a Junior road race 111;
192S. He retired from the sport in 1934j
but In 1939 joined Hawthorn Amateurs .

AFTER SEVEN YEARS
In 1943, after seven years of retirement,
he got back to racing. He was
always weU up In the recent board track
season, and last year won the Newlands
40-mtle road race at Preston.
Now 30 Gordon Is going back to the
scratch mark. That will be his mark in
the next open race.
As In the previous races this season.
