Cordner's hit out went
to McLean, but Crane beat
off the attack. The Hawks
raced goalwards, and when
Peck sent the ball into the
teeth of goal Nash picked
up and snapped first goal.
Melbourne's response
was -quick — McKenzie
passed to Clarke for the
answering six points.
McKenzie then picked
his way through the
Hawks' defence and
brought up another goal.
A cross wind concentrated
play on the outer wing,
with neither side able to
break out. McMahon
drove a long kick across
the centre, but O'Brien intercepted,
and Hawthorn
had a chance.
A free to Collins eased
the pressure for the
Demons, whose defence
stood up to several attacks, ,
with Beckwith and Collins
in everything.
I
Melville gave Melbourne !
a break and McGivern
outniarked Philp, but Hawhorn's
determined defence
only allowed a point. [
A sudden Hawthorn j
drive brought their .second,
goal. Woodley hand-pass-.
ed to Peck, who ran into
;an open goal.
| Coghlan dribbled the j
j next one through seconds

I chance but missed.
i The crowd roared as the !
.Demons swept goalw'ardsl
to reply. |
SCORES LEVEL j
Clarke gave Spencer a
smart hand-pass and he
levelled the scores at 3.1.
McMahen and Williams led
tht next Melbourne attack
and Johnson shot the ball
• o McKenzie. who made no
mistake with a great angle
shot.
The Hawks' pace kept
them plugging forward
only to find the Melbourne
defence in great form.
The Demons led by 4-2
to 3-1 at quarter time. A
good effort, as if anything
the wind favored Hawthorn.
Goals to Coghlan and
Clarke marked the opening
of the second term.
Fletcher and Hughes
defended strongly as the
Demons fought back, and
Mithen hit the post with
an angle shot. Melbourne's
physical strength kept
them within range until
Johnson marked and easily
goaled.
At last Hawthorn took turn. Thompson sent a
long kick goalwards. but
Melbourne's hard-hitting
and pacy defence cleared.
Williams. McMahen, and
Collins time and again put
the home team in the forward
zone. Only the defence
of Philp. Hughes, and
Fletcher kept the Demons
from piling on a biR lead.
STRONG DEFENCES
It was a poor game, with
defence the outstanding
feature.
Johnson got his second
goal for the quarter with
an acute angle shot. Mithen
followed with another,
and the Demons led by 27
4 points.
Outrucked and beaten in
the air, HawtJiorn could
not get on top and swung
Thompson on the ball but
to no avail.
McGivern brought up
Melbourne's ninth goal
after a free. They had
established a winning lead
against a team whose forwards
were outclassed.
Thompson outmar k e d
McMahen, and Kennedy
drove home a much-needed
goal for Hawthorn. They
came again only for
Thompson to miss from
easy range.
Most of the play was on
the outer wing with
neither side showing top
form.
Bara.ssi ;o Johnson was a
bright burst and worth;
more than the point that
followed.
McMAHEN IN \VA1'
A great Tcick off by
Crane was marked bv Kennedy,
but McMahen.
\ although heavilv bandaged
on the thigh, checked Hawthorn's
progress goalwards.
The Melbourne defence
was still a match-winning
\ factor and. coupled with
the strength of Cordner
and Johnson, allowed the
Hawks little latitude.
A kick off the ground bv
Johnson found McKenzie.
He shot to Clarke, and up
went the Demons' tenth
goal.
Down 36 point,s Hawthorn
attacked strongly
but Cordner marked in the
teeth of goal.
CRANE HURT
A great run by Adams
began a Melbourne attack
and Hawthorn were unlucky
to lose brilliant full
back Crane.
He limped from the
ground and Considine took
over the vacancy.
It was all Melbourne but
bad kicking for goal—1.6
for the quarter—prevented
a huge score
When Johnson scored
his third goal the Demons
led by 45 points and were
in unassailable position.
Melbourne set out in increase
their percentage and
Mi then goaled. They can:e
again with McMahen
roaming wide to drop kick
into the goal base.
Kennedy temporally
stemmed the tide but it
was McGivern who drove
through a long drop.
All interest had gone except
by how much the
Demons would win.
HAWKS BELOW FORM
The Hawks managed a
point before Melbourne
again swung into attack
and Adams brought v;p
their 14th goal.
A great pass by Mithen
to Clarke and the Demons
were at it again. McKenzie
goaling from an angle.
Hawthorn's play throutflout
was far below the
form they showed early in
the season.
Their forwards were :oo
match for the Demons' tiefence
and were too easily
swept aside.
Courageous Simmonds
kept them in the game, but
he lacked support and Melbourne
coasted to an easy
win.
