COUNTRY FOOTBALL
By GEORGE ANDREW
HAMPDEN
Newcomers in Bill Hose,
rover from Port Campbell,
and Ron Henrichsen (Carlisle
River), a 20-year-old
half-forward, showed
plenty of promise with
Cobden.
A star at centre half-forward
the previous week,
GEO. MILNE, was equally
effective on the wing for
Colac against Warrnambool.
Terang coach, Dick
Wearmouth, former Footscray
winger, was again the
best player afield. His
continual drive from the
centre enabled his side to
narrowly defeat Cobden.
Without full-forward
Bernie Baxter, Port Fairy
were down one point at
half time. Under the
guidance of coach Keith
Rosewarne (4 goals) they
kicked 55 points to 14 to
win easily.
Two lads from the under-18
competition starred for
Mortlake — Ken Beardsley
(also outstanding last
week) and 17-year-old
Charlie Grasby, who did
well in the ruck and on the
forward line.
Cobden, runner-up last
year, have yet to win a
game, whilst Colac, premiers
for the past two
seasons, have won only
one game — they defeated
Cobden.
Ex-Geelong College lad,
18-year-old Peter Hinduaugh
showed plenty of
dash and courage on the
half-back flank — he's a
tough "come through" type.
Jack O'Rourke managed
four goals against strong
opposition from Mortlake
full-back, Frank Judd, and
leads the goalkickers with
18 goals in three games.
BALLARAT
The Redan-Maryborough
draw was a thriller, Maryborough
led with seconds to
play and then Redan
forced the ball over the
line to equal the scores.
The umpire reported
Maryborough coach and
full forward Vic. Chanter,
and Redan full hack Doug
Lyons for having allegedly
fought: and Maryborough
rover Des Cartright for
unseemly conduct.
Former Melbourne
backman Ron McMahon
was the best player afield,
He dominated the ruck
duels all day.
East Ballarat centre half-forward
Graham Donaldson
was again a star — he
has been signed by Carlton.
At the game to see his
play was Carlton scout
and former player Arthur
Sanger.
Ballarat lost their coach,
Percy Hunt, former Geelong
defender, who left the
field in the third quarter
It is suspected that he has
several broken ribs.
Under the guidance of
former St. Kilda champion,
Alan Killigrew. East
Ballarat are a vastly improved
side, and easily defeated
last year's premiers
by 49 points.
K. Thompson, J. Farrell
and H. Cook, all from
Richmond Seconds, were
prominent for North Ballarat
against Ballarat.
Graham Willey, young
Redan centre half forward,
who has been sought
by Melbourne clubs, received
a badly fractured
shoulder against Maryborough
and will be idle
for some time.
OVENS AND
MURRAY
Wangaratta Rovers
registered their first win
over their neighbors Wangaratta
since they entered
the League in 1950. In that
period Wangaratta won
three premierships but so
far this year have not won
a game.
The Murray Border
Council of the VCFL is
concerned that the Yackandandah
League has
gone into recess. A conference
of the affiliated
leagues (Ovens and King,
Chiltern, Tallangatta and
Yackandandah) will discuss
reallocation of teams
for various leagues.
Corowa won their first
game of the season when
they defeated North Albury
by 11 points. Their new
coach, former Tasmanian
Bill Byrne, dominated the
game.
Although Wodonga led
by 10 points at half time
Yarrawonga fought back
through "Dolly" Aked who
kicked five goals in the
third quarter, and went on
to win by nine goals and
maintain their unbeaten
record.
Former Hawthorn forward
Barry Griffiths gave
an outstanding exhibition
of high marking for Albury
against Rutherglen and
finished with 8 goals.
Officials are pleased with
the way coach Alan Dale is
handling Wangaratta Rovers—his
coaching ideas plus
his great play in the centre
has given the Rovers great
lift.
Ovens and Murray
League have advised the
VCFL that while they
favor an Appeal Board
they strongly oppose any
breakaway move.
WESTERN
Les Wallace, who was on
Melbourne's list last season,
scored 10 of
Hamilton's 28 goals against the
previously unbeaten Merino-Digby.
Reg Schofield, glamor
full-forward of the Western
District prior to
Fred Fanning made
a welcome reappearance
with Coleraine and kicked
five goals.
With coach Jack Condon
dominating the ruck,
Portland kicked 5.3 to 2.1
in the last quarter to down
Coleraine by 12 points in
the best game of the season
so far.
Penshurst coach George
Swarbrick (ex-Geelong),
played his first game for
the season and his tussle
with "Bomber" Murray
was even while his condition
lasted.
Although reaching the
veteran stage, Ivan Mouat
was outstanding for Hamilton
at centre half-back.
GOULBURN
VALLEY
Shepparton, a final four
team for the past four
years, won their second
game after losing the first
three. However, both wins
were against teams yet to
register a win — Murchison
and Rushworth.
While last year's premiers,
Tatura, were not
impressive in their win over
Nagambie, they provided a
star in 17-year-old centre
half-forward Ian Walters.
His long drop kicks were a
feature.
Lemnos and Rushworth
were level at half-time but
outstanding defence by
Lemnos coach. Jack Roberts
(ex Richmond) enabled
the side to win comfortably.
Jack Svenson, who played
two games with South
Melbourne as full forward,
was in a new role
on Saturday. With Ron
Paez dominating the
centre in the Shepparton-Murchison
game. Svenson
was switched to the centre
in the second half and
blanketed Paez.
Mooroopna, under Jack
Murphy, are the most improved
side in the league
and have won the last
three games. In the past
two seasons they won only
eight games.
Their best player against
Tongala was local policeman
Bob Blackwood, who
was unbeatable in the ruck
and best player afield.
MORNINGTON
PENINSULA
Unbeaten teams, in Sorrento
and Seaford, meet in
the game of the day. The
winners could become firm
favorites for this year's
pennant.
Hastings' outstanding
player was former Broadford
centreman, Fred
Swan: His drive from the
centre was mainly reponsible
for his side's first
win for the season.
Max and Les. Tolson,
6ft. 7in. brothers, were
outstanding in the ruck
for Crib Point.
Former Footscray champion,
Alby Morrison, is
still kicking goals. Playing
forward pocket he
got four for Sorrento
against Crib Point.
The return of former
veteran ruckman, Frank
Graham, and former winger,
"Brick" Stone," will
greatly strengthen
Frankston. Leading goalkicker
of 1952, Frank Ricardo,
is expected to
appear.
Vic. Weinarski, who
played two games with
Oakleigh this season, has
returned to Seaford with
his brother, Brian, former
St. Kilda winger.
Ted O'Neill, back from
Moorabbin; and Ron Battams,
ex St. Kilda, were
unbeatable on the back
line for Seaford, and with
full-forward Bill Martin
(6 goals) were best players
against Pearcedale.
LATROBE
VALLEY
Morwell and Warragul
only undefeated teams,
meet at Morwell on Saturday.
Morwell are expected
to win.
Morwell, with J. Coffey
(ex St. Kilda), R. Rhode
and D. Beitzel (ex Maffra),
starring, defeated Trafalgar,
whose best were Eric
Moore (ex Fitzroy) and
locals T. Ryans and W.
Jenkins.
Traralgon, weakened by
injuries and boys in camp,
could not extend Yallourn.
Traralgon got excellent
service ftom R. Millier (ex
Maffra), R. Crozier (ex
Footscray and Morwell). J.
Merritt, local junior, and
full-forward A. Anton,
Yallourn's best were:
Bernie Nairn (sixth year
with club), B. Harkin, J
Christie, K. Parker and
John Hutchinson (17-year-old
centre half-forward).
Sale trounced Yarragon
with captain Bob Nathan
setting an outstanding example
in the ruck.
C. Andusson, Yarragon's
coach and captain (ex
Sandringham) starred.
Warragul proved too
strong for Moe. Warragul
ruck C. Burgess (ex Prahran)
aud K. Best (ex Preston)
allowed their rovers
M. Reeves (ex Melbourne)
and K. Harrop (ex Stawell)
to dominate the game,
BENDIGO
Winners of only three
games last year, Golden
Square have won two out
of three under the guidance
of former Essendon
champion. Norm McDonald.
Kyneton have a coming
champion in 18-year-old
high living Lee Griffin.
When his kicking improves
this 6.1 centre
half-forward will hold his
own in any company.
Last years premiers,
Eaglehawk, were beaten for
the second time despite the
return of Geo Ilsley (back
from Carlton), who starred
in the centre.
Sandhurst full forward
Don Blackmore kicked 7
goals against Rochester.
Not tall for a full forward
this fellow has a good
spring, and is an accurate
kick.
Noel Evans, Sandhurst
rover, was again unbeatable.
He is one of the
many class rovers to
graduate from the Bendigo
League. Others include Jim
Mooring and John Mills
(Carlton), and Peter Plante
(Geelong).
Kev Curran will be in
doubt for the big clash
between
Sandhurst and
Castlemaine on Saturday
as he received a possible
broken hand against
Rochester.
Sandhurst are the only
team unbeaten, while last
year's premiers. Eaglehawk,
have won only one game.
WIMMERA
Horsham had a star at
each end of the ground—
full-forward Les Connelly
(Tyntinder), who
kicked 4 goals; and a new
full-back, Eddie Douthie,
formerly of Moorabbin.
Last year's premiers,
Warrackuabeal, had their
first win when they easily
defeated Murtoa. This
year they are without
nine of last year's team.
Jack Kranz, at centre
half-forward (7 goals), and
ex-Geelong winger, Peter
West, were best for Warracknabeal.
Former Brighton half-forward,
Jack Douglas, has
played the last 201 games
without a miss — the last
60 with Jeparit, which he
coached for three years
prior to this season.
Coach Ken Roberts,
showing a return to the
form that made him a star
for Richmond, has been
best afield for Minyip in
the past two Saturdays.
Reg Evans, Minyip's
former champion full-back,
has been switched to centre
half-forward, and was
one of their best against
Nhill.
Les Beer (Dimboola),
was reported by Umpire
Miller for allegedly having
struck J. Bonner (Stawell),
and will appear before
Wimmera Tribunal next
Saturday night.
NTH CENTRAL
Boort are the only undefeated
team in the competition
while Charlton
and Birchip have yet to
win a game.
Donald full back Roy
Lemon broke his leg
against Boort. A subscription
was taken up immediately
and more than
£100 was in hand when
the game ended.
Tom Leehane, Boort
coach, was reported the
previous Saturday for misconduct.
The charge was
not sustained, and Leehane
celebrated by being best
afield against Donald.
Other coaches to star
were former Essendon
winger Ron Luna (Birchip).
and ex-Sandringham
full back Murray
Guille (Charlton).
BROKEN HILL
With better early season
preparation Souths played
strong football to defeat
Norths. 17.12 to 9.17.
Souths were driven goalwards
repeatedly by brilliant
Don Jensen from the
centre. D. Krushka in the
goalmouth gave an acrobatic
display to top Jensen's
drives off with six
goals.
Big Alby Hoskings
battled well for Norths and
got four goals. The side
lacked cohesion.
