Proclaimed a Town
By the Lieut.-Governor,
Sir John Madden.
WEDNESDAY, 24th APRIL, 1901.
Photos by Scars, Au.stral'an Buildings,
Elizabeth-street, Melbourne.
In the festivities in connection with the proclamation
of Malvern as a town the children of the
district were not left out of the civic function, as
the Mayor (Cr. Alex. M'Kinley) on Thursday last
entertained all the scholars attending the state
and private schools of Malvern. The scene of the
picnic was the Caulfield racecourse, immediately
adjoining the new-made town. Before marching
thither on Thursday morning, the member for the
district, the Hon. Duncan Gillies, unfurled the
Union Jack at the Spring-street State school in
the presence of the children. At Tooronga State
school the Mayoress (Mrs. M'Kinley) performed a
similar ceremony. These loyal and patriotic
functions concluded, the children moved to the
spot which sporting writers delight to dub the
classic heath. There were about 3000 children
present, and the youngsters seemed to have a
most enjoyable time of it. Caterer Skinner had
provided ample refreshments of all kinds, and
there were all the amusements-dear to childhood,
Mr. Munyard's Punch and Judy show, marionettes,
merry - go - rounds and various games,
sports, footraces, &c. A large number of parents
assembled as spectators of the children's fete.
The youngsters were delighted at being the
recipients "of the Mayor's hospitality, and
unanimously declared that it would be advisable
to proclaim Malvern a town once a week.

THE ' at home' given by the President of
Coburg, Cr. Arthur Cherry, J.P., and Mrs.
Cherry to the local Commonwealth celebrations
committee on Thursday evening was an unqualified
success. The public hall looked very pretty.
Some pot-plants at the stage end, arranged by
the Misses Cherry, contributed to the good effect
given by the recent decoration of the interior.
Visitors were received at the northern end
by Cr. and Mrs. Cherry. Each member of
the committee had received a neatly-printed
circular, signed by the shire secretary. Mr. P.
O'Shannessy, conveying the president's appreciation
of the good services rendered in the recent
celebration, together with an inscribed silver
medal as a souvenir. The medals, suspended by
tri-colour ribbon, were worn by the committee in
compliment to Cr. Cherry. The programme was
contributed to by the following :—Miss Fannie
Barnard, Miss B. Miranda, Miss Adelaide Bruce,
Miss Clare Atherton, Miss Maggie Griffith, Miss
Auguste Linden, Mr. Hector Lightfoot, Mr.
T. E. Jones, Mr. E. A. Harris, Mr. H. C. Forster,
Mr. A. Cherry, Miss Nathalie Dawson, Mr. Emil
Creed and Dr. M'Cillicuddy.
THE Hampton Club held another of their most
enjoyable picnic-dances at the Hampton
Tea
Gardens on Saturday last, 27th April.
It was
unanimously couriered to be the best of the
season, great praise being due to the untiring
efforts of the committee to make it so.
The tea--
tables
especially
looked very
pretty,
being
effectively
decorated with the club colours, also
the Japanese serviettes, having borders of the
same.
It would be almost impossible to mention
all that were there, but among them we noticed
the following ladies and gentlemen :
