"BRIDESHEAD
REVISITED"
Sir,—Mr. Lawlor rather begs
the question when he suggests
that I have "misinterpreted
some aspects" of his article on
Evelyn Waugh's "Brideshead
Revisited." I tried to lay down
an objective criterion by which
one might determine how the
novelist should go about his
work. If Mr. Lawlor will not
accept this, then there is only
the individual conscience left to
decide. In that case, Evelyn
Waugh's conscience apparently
settled the issue for him, and
Mr. Lawlor has no complaint.
But what Mr. Lawlor seemingly
wants is that Mr. Lawlor's conscience
should decide what
Evelyn Waugh should write, and
we Catholics should read. That
is not valid criticism.—Yours,
etc.,
—JULIA D'ARCY.
