THE CAPUCHIN ORDER
The Capuchin Order is one of
the three independent branches
of the Franciscans, .initiated by
Blessed Matteo da Bascio in
1525. The Capuchin Fathers weai
a' coarse brown habit girded with
a cord, a long pointed , hood,
sandals and a beard; their conventual
life is strict, the laybrothers
have to beg and their
churches are very plain; the
Divine Office is recited without
chant, with the high office at Midnight.
They are principally engaged
in missionary work
throughout the world. In the
English-speaking world, there
are provinces in England, Ireland
and the United Sta'tes. The
two principal provinces in the
U.S., from which the new Australian
foundation is being made,
are Mount Calvary and Pennsylvania.
