ROWING.
The four-oared championship of Vietoria
took place over a 2% miles course
<)n the Lower "Eprra on Saturday,
and
was raced under
ideal conditions,
although
Melbourne's
stream
in
that
particular locality is not an ideal venue
for the
enthusiasts
Who
witness
the
events.
From Coode iBland to the Big
Crane, just before you come to Queen's
Bridge, is'about as straight a line as it
is possible to choose, but the interference
of
shipping
has
often
caused
changes in a race.

Mercantile,
the
winners,
were
the
heaviest crew in the race, and led from
start
to
finish,
and
were
capably
stroked by J. L. Mounsey, a nephew of
A. B Sloan, a champion of years ago.
Herbie
Green
was
starter,
and
despatched
the crews away to a fair start,
but
Dave
Barrle,
No. 3 in
Hawthorn
boat, crabbed and
fell out.
The
race
was
re-started,
and
"Mercs."
immediately
took
the
lead,
with
Footscray
close handy.
Mercantile,
rowing
with
a beautiful swing, increased their
advantage.
The other crews changed positions
often in the race, and the judge's
placlngs
were:—Mercantile,

five
lengths;

Jack Mounsey has thoroughly
earned
his victory in the championship.
With
the same men he won his maiden four
at Ballarat in 1914, junior four at
the
same regatta, and senior four at Colac
regatta.
The
combination
rowed
at
Henley, but were defeated by the famous
Murray Bridge crew after a
hard
contest.
Mounsey
also won a
double
maiden
eight at Upper Tarra and
Albert
Park in 1914, and junior eight
at
Henley
in
1914.
His
form
warrants
special attention from the selectors, and
the writer is of the opinion that he is
an oarsman * who -* pulls * his * weight.
- The V.R.A. regatta
is set down
for
Saturday,
December
3rd,
and
new
crews are in the thick of It once again.
Mercantile

leaving
no
stone
unturned
to get a crew for every race—*
as It should be.
