NATIONAL MONUMENT TO
GRATTAN.
TheDublincorreBpondent of theTipperary
Free Press thus writes respecting the progress
of the movement to erect a national
monument to Henry Grattan in College
Green, Dublin :—" 1 am glad to tell you
that the movement for a statue to Henry
Grattan is going on famously, and the project
so generously set on foot by Mr,
Sullivan has been sanctioned and supported
by some of the first men in Ireland. Next
week an address to the people generally
will be issued by the committee and also
sent to the nobility, bishops, clergy, members
of parliament, corporate bodies, &c.,
soliciting their subscriptions, and there can
be no question as to the result. Large
contributions are not expected or required,
but moderate sums from numerous quarters
will help to complete the work, and it is
hoped that every town in Ireland will aid
in thus doing honour to the memory of one
whose genius was as brilliant as his
patriotism was pure, and who thought and
struggled for the independence of his
country with a chivalry the most devoted
and a fidelity that never wavered.
