British and Foreign
Bible Society
VISIT BY MR. E. F. DERBYSHIRE
Next Sunday, September 2, the de
putation-lecturer of the British and
Foreign Bible Society will visit Port
Augusta. He will preach at the Pres
byterian Church in the morning and
Methodist Church in the evening. Sun
day Schools will be visited in the af
ternoon. A lantern lecture entitled
"Modern Scenes in Syria and Pales
tine," will be presented in the Metho
dist Church at 8.15 a.m.
As this is the centenary year of
the State Branch of the Bible Society
it is hoped that splendid local sup
port will be forthcoming.
AIMS OF THE SOCIETY
The aims of the society is to pub
lish the Bible, without note or com
ment, in all languages; to place a
copy in every man's hands every
where; to co-operate with all church
es and societies willing to help in giv
ng the Bible to the world; to supply
institutions, such as prisons and hos
pitals, with free copies of the Scrip
tures; to supply missionary societies
either free or at less than cost price.
WHAT HAS BEEN DONE
In 141 years the Bible Society
has been responsible for publishing
the Scriptures in 761 languages. In a
normal year the Society circulates
about ten million copies. 186,100 were
circulated last year in Australia.
About 1,000 colporteurs and Bible
women are employed to spread the
Word of God. A number of them are
supported by friends in Australia.
More than three million New Testa
ments, containing a message from
H.M. the King, have been circulated
free since the beginning of the war,
354,659 of them in the Commonwealth.
Contributions to the Bible Society
will be applied to the above work of
translation, publication and distribu
tion of the Word of God.
