DEMPSEY'S "LAST RACE."
Eranfe' Dempsey, who left for England
on Tuesday, had his last rides in Aus
tralia at Caulfield on Saturday, and it was
an appropriate farewell that he should ride
the winner of the chief event of the day,
Sailing Home. Dempsey, on returning to
the enclosure, was given a wonderful re
ception. Dempsey has been engaged to
ride for Sir Charles Hyde, for whom an
other Victorian, Norman Scobie, trains.
At a dinner given to Dempsey by the citi
zens of Mentone and Mordialloc on Thurs
day night, Dempsey was presented with a
gold cigarette case and a framed testi
monial. The presentation of the cigarette
case was made by the Mayor of Mordialloc
(Cr. Bradshaw). The testimonial, which
was in duplicate, so that Dempscy's mother
could retain a copy while he was away,
was signed by all who attended the dinner
When presenting it, Dr. Joyce paid a
tribute to Dempsey's physical fitness (ac
cording to The Argus). J. Holt, who has
recently taken charge of Heroic for Mr.
M. Wenke, referred to Dempsey as a per
fect type of jockey. Since 1919, when
Dempsey first rode for him, Holt said that
Dempsey had ridden more than 100 win
ners for him alone.
