Mr. George Wilcox.
One of the most familiar figures in com-
mercial circles in Adelaide for many years
was that of Mr. George Wilcox, who died
at his residence, Eynesbury, Mitcham.road,
on Wednesday morning, after a long ill-
ness. Born in Huntingdonshire, England,
in 1838, Mr. Wilcox came to South Austra-
lia in 1857, and shortly afterward, with
his father, established a drapery and gene-
ral merchandise business at Gawler. Seven
teen years latter he removed to Adelaide,
and launched out as a wool and produce
merchant, but paid particular attention to
the development of the hide and skin
trade. T.he enterprise rapidly expanded,
and in time branches were opened in other
States. In 1889 Messrs. Sidney Wilcox (a
son) and G. G. Legoe were taken into
partnership, and on the retirement of Mr.
Wilcox, sen., from the firm in 1894, the re
maining partners were joined by two other
sons—Messrs. G. S. and Murray Wilcox.
Until the illness, which ended in his death
overtook him, Mr. Wilcox, although "out
of harness" so far as actual business was
concerned, drove into the city every day,
and spent a few hours in his office in
Currie street. He took keen interest in
his garden at Mitcham, and was particu-
larly proud of the magnificent wistaria—
one of the finest and largest in Australia
—growing against the house.
