In Com mittee the O pposition became
lively, and a succession o f sccaes took
place. T he item , reducing tb e salsry of
th e Governor from £5000 to £4000, was
agreed to, and an am endm ent to grant
H is Excellency £1000 a s allow ances was
negatived. A motion ‘to rep o rt progress
wes negatived by sixteen votes to five,
a n d eventually the B ill * a s read
a th ird tim e. In th e course of the
disca&sioD, tbe A ttorney-G eneral ssid be

rath e r proceed w ith th e D ebtors’ Bill,
w hich v i i designed to fre e a m a n now
languishing in prison. T h e H ouse,
hearing this statem ent, insisted, as an act
