THE WOOL SALES.
FOUHTII OF THE SERIES
First Day, Monday; November
As was expected would be the case, the
influence of Bradford buyers was fell from
the -very start of the wool tales 011 Mow
day. The occasion was the opening of the
fourth series of local auctions, when ofier
ings were the largest on record, as regards
either Australia or t.lie world. [Shearing,
which had been delayed by broken weatiiei'
earlier in. the season, had progressed much
more rapidly during the interval between
the third ;.nd fourth series, with the result
that stocks of wool had accumulated ac
the wool stores, and the deficiency in offer
ings to date as compared with last year has
been overtaken, 'iiie selection ol wool at
this sale was eminently suited to the re
quiremuits of Bradford manufacturers, who
take much more of the bold, shafty fleece
of the middle north , of South Austral',t
than their Continental, competitors. Then,
too, it was believed that American in
fluence would not be wanting, since many
01 tlie lots were in light condition', render
ing it possible for them .to- be introduced
ui.dcr tlie Lnited States tariff. A little im
ccrt.iinty existed in the minds ? of some as
to the direction- in which priccs would go.
A week earlier an easing was reported in
SSi-iney. At first it was thought that there
might have been some mistake about this,
but the report of the drop was confirmed
011 the following day. Melbourne did n it
respond to this mood; in fact, the market
there, and aho that 011 the other side ui
the world; showed considerable firmness.
Xow if the .verdict of Adelaide be cast into
the-scales tlie market certainly cannot O'i
reported as any easier. The fact is, buyers
want wooi, and in the present state of tins
world's trade tliev are able to pay big;
prices to get it, " Continental operators
though by no means altogether quiescent
on Monday, were in nothing like tlie de
gree of evidence as at earlier sales; but
their quietness was fully compensated fo:
by the kemness of Yorkshire and American
buyeis. There were exceedingly eager from
the stall, and at times the pace was as hot,
it not hotter, than at any time this season,
or indeed at any date in recent years. The
first lot knocked down consisted of four
bales of merino, -which was taken by one
of the dominant interests referred to a;
9:jd. From then on it was a veritable
scramble for wool, and that at high prices.
All well-grown wools; especially those in
light condition, were taken without ques
tion. If at times the auctioneer had 11
indicate that owners' limits had been
scarcely reached, the lot was not inlro
quently quickly snapped up at the
price "named. There wc;e of course
to.r.e withdrawals, but the propor
tion was not great. All good wools
were higher than . at the previous
scries, and though it is a liitle diHicult
to institute an exact comparison, owing to
the difference in the quality of much .of the
fleece, the market may be quoted ns quite

-Dalgety & Co.-- " - I
Dalgety '& Co., Limited, successors to
Strachan, Cheadle, & C<b., offered ' 3,512
bales, and sold 3,361 bales, and report hav
ing had a most successful sale, as they did
not ?withdraw 5 per cent, of their cata
logue. . There was a large attendance or ;
buyers, especially operators on Yorkshire i
ana American account, the- wools in this j
sale being more suitable for their require
ments than in previous. auctions, /-their ,
bidding constituted the, chief factor in the j
sale, and all lines of well-grown, clean
merino wools sold at .from £d. to id. i
j>«' ife. advance . upon previous rates. |
Crossbred s, too, met with animated com- |
petition, and former values were more i
than maintained. Prices for northern
.wools showed little change, the bidding |
from the Continental section being some
what languid. Lambs failed to maintain
the high rates ruling last sale, save in a :
few exceptional cases; and, .generally j
speaking, may be quoted! from Jd, to £d.
lower. Among tbe principal lines sold ?
by us were Mr. Richard Avery's clip,
grown near Wocdeide, the crossbred oi
which sold up to 12d., and the merino lid.-=
per H). Mr. Albert Gebhardt's Mackerode
clip, a well-grown wool, from near the
.Burro, sold up to,103 d., the pieces from
hthe same clip realizing 9jd.. Mr, L. ,W.
Gebhardt's Mount Cone wool also realized
10Jd. for the top lots and 8Jd- for the
lambs, Messrs. T. Staeey & Sons, of the
ITinniss, realized UJd. for.-the top lot of
fine crossbred. The estate of the late W.
B. Sells realized, up to lid;, for the top
line, of Second Valley, this being the first
occasion on which this wool has been
offered in this market. Mr. David Power
secured ll|d. and lljd. for the Jcading
"lines of Wirrilla wool, grown near Ma

Ikgct, Sliakes, & Lewis, Limited, witK
which is amalgamated Luxmoore, Dowling.
and Jeffrey, Limited, continued their sale
of the "star" lots, which was adjourned
from Monday, and they report that the
market was again strong for all classes ex
cept earthy lots, which did not sell eo well
as a fortnight ago; but where the woofe
were light in condition and suitable for
American requirements they were eagerly
competed for, and satisfactory prices werte
obtained. The "star"' lots and farmers'
lot? generally cold very well indeed, doubt
less largely owing to farmers paying morff
attention to the pot-up of their small lines.
The firm oft'ered 4,491 bales and.870 sacks
of wool, and sold 3,930 bales and all the
sacks. Some of the principal lines were:
