WOMEN AND HARD TIMES.
TO T»E EDITOR.
Sir-I have been a constant student and
lecturer on anatomy, psychology, and other
scientific branches of the irn perfectly under
stood philosophy of phrenology for some
years, and could not help smiling at tho pitiful
pioture presented by the very juvenile and ill
informed sorilw whose name and pointless
letter a sensible writer replied to to-day under
the now, de plume " WirroandaGirl." Anyone
who knows the merest elements of brain
anatomy must t>9 aware that the average
weight of a woman's brain is 4?>oz., and that
of vain-glorious man 48. Borne women
have very small heads, as for instance E. B.
Browning and F. Homans, but the- quality
and culture of their brain f'llly atoned for the
lack of weight. . Brain culture counts for
niuoh more than more natural size. The
largest brain ever possessed by man is sup
posed to have been the property of a stone
mason. Though the brain of Cuvier weighed
64 07... that of an elephant weighs about HO
oz., mora than twice the weight of the most
powerful thinker on our glow*. There are
many men whose heads are comparatively
small, yet whose intellects are- very kaen and
highly cultured ; but, given a largo brain and
great opportunity of development, that has
been wisely employed,'the largo brain wins
the prize.
