THE ENGLISH CRICKETERs AT
BROKEN HILL.
MATCH AGAINST A l.OCAb 15'QHTKEN.

Mr. fitoddart's team began a match against
eighteen players of Broken liill this looming.
A matting and asphalt wioket had been pre
pared on the Recreation Association iround,
about three miles from tbe town, and the
spectators were codveyed by train from the
ground. Riobardsnn and Lookwood were
omitted from the hluglisb team. The foual
team was oaptained by A. J. flail, whu won
the toes and elected to bat. Humphreys
started tbe bowling, and 4 leg-byes were
soored when the first wicket was olean
bowled. An unaccountable fright then eet in,
and four more .wiokete fell without any adai
tion to the ecore. Of the first fivo wicketa
Humphreys olean bowled four and Brockwell
one. Neilson and D'Arcy, however, stopped
the rot, both playing splendid cricket though
not snoring muab. Tbe remaining batsmen
scored better. Only one man reached doable
figures, and tbe innings olosed for 68. The
linglisbmen opened badly. Peel being given
out l.b.w. by Mr. Phillips, witb the total
at 4, and Gay being olean bowled an
over later without any addition to the
eoore. MoLareh and Ward got together,
and oarried " the total to 41, when the
latter was caught at point. Brookwell
did not last, but McLaren and Stoddart hit
hard. The former was oangbt to the long
field for 56, and he should have been taken
.early in bis innings at leg. hix wickets were
down for 138 when stumps were drawn. The
, BrokeD Hill fielding was of a very high order,

innings defeat. Oullen and Lake opened "the

After lunch the batsmen played with greater
confidence, and teemed at if they would hava
' little difficulty in wiping off tbe deficit of 110.

runa were etill wanted to avert a one
innings defeat with 3 wioketa to falL
After the adjournment the remaining
wiokete fell for the addition of only
2 runa, the Englishmen thus winning by an
innings and 8 runa. The bowling and ground
fielding of the local men was aplendid, but
several cbanoes were missed. Ross, who took
5 English wiokete for 60, waa the ohief
suff-rer, aix chances being refused off hia
bowling during the two days, and his per
formance under the oircurastanoea waa a
