HOPE FOR FRUITGROWERS.
There are about seventy millions of people
in America, and there are a great many of
them fruitgrowers. Now, it is reokoned that
if all the fruit grown were fairly divided
amongst the people thcro are plenty of them
who could easily eat their whole year's share
at one meal. And the " system" that is being
adopted by the fruitgrowers in distributing
their prodnoe iB becoming bo complete that
there is every hope that the great majority of
the people will iearn to eat fruit at least
once a day. • The "system" allows of no
bruising and dnmaging of the fruit, no rubbish
placed upon the market, no middlemen to take
all the profits from the producer and to mulot
the consumer of three times tho value of the
article supplied. The fruit, in its moBt per
fect condition, is placed on the counters of
the ordinary tea and sugar grocers, sold on
A' small commission in small lots at low rates,
and yet .the grower gets higher prices, the
oonsnmer gets his fruit at 'much lower rates,
apd the grocer is satisfied with his commis
sion. Prunes and dried and canned fruits
give the American" fruitgrowers an Oppor
tunity to oontrol the market supplier, end the
people are learning to nee these artioles in
plaoeof thesugareomfits, lollies, oaramels, &o.,
•with Which they wore wont to destroy their
own digestions and to ruin the health of their
children, Now,' the Americans cannot get
enough of fruit alt the year through, and it has
been stated over and over again that their
seasons are opposite to the seasons in Austra
lia^ They will be glad to have Australian
fruits which come in at a time when their own
markets are bare. If it is possible that they
will not be able to supply a tithe of their local
requirements, through the education of the
people in frugivorous habits, then there is hope
that the people of Europe generally, and of
England in partioular, will follow the fashion,
and England's need will then become Austra
lia's opportunity—prorided she oan learn how
tobe careful in supplying only good sound fruit.
