UNEMPLOYED AT GLADSTONE.
Gladstone, July 15.
The question of the unemployed here ib most
serious. In reply to a wire from the Mayor a
few days einoe the Premier intimated that a
larger number of men would be taken on, but
this morning about fifty men and several teams
were knocked off. The Mayor reoeived a wire
yesterday that a destitute officer was coming
to-day to relieve distress. Work would be far
more acceptable. Local residents have been
taxed severely in their endeavours to save men
from starving, and something will have to be
done immediately. There are many cases of
genuine distress, and a very strong feeling pre
vails that by prompt action on the part of the
Government this might be avoided.
