MHANG.
[From our own Correspondent.!
Milan?. June 14.
Business continues very quiet in this township
at present. Several lots of wheat are being de
livered at tlie mill, and I think there is very little
now unsold in the district. The high prices which I
have lately been obtained will tend to make things !
a little brisker.
lJr. Browne's letter, in your last issue, deserves ;
the special attention of all those interested in faci
litating communication with the south-eastern
portion of the province. If the scheme can be
carried out at anything like a moderate outlay, the
value of the boon granted would be very great.

Boats liave been plying between Milang and Salt
Creek regularly for years past, and at moderate
rates; but with the improvement spoken of, and
thereafter the introduction of steamers as a matter
of course, increased facilities and reduced freights
would follow. With regard to which is the easiest,
most expeditious, and economical, route from the
Murray to Adelaide, I would say that from Milang
offers advantages far superior to any other. The
entire distance is 47 miles. The road from Ade
laide to Strathalbyn is equal to any in the colony,
and it only requires that the portions of road still
unmade on the Milang Branch should be com
pleted, and this a small sum would effect. The
present rate of carriage from Adelaide to Milang is
£2 per ton; but were the Milang Branch-road
finished, it would be reduced to 35s. per ton. I am
not aware of any other line to the Murray that
could compete with this, were an enterprising
party to enter into business on it; and it is sur
prising that the masters of steamers and others
engaged in the up-river trade have never turned
their attention to it. There is ample accommoda
tion for all the river steam-craft at our jetty, and
plenty of water for any of them—all that has been
saiil to the contrary notwithstanding.
The waters of the Bake are rapidly rising, and
present appearance would almost indicate that
they will reach the unprecedented height to which
they attained last season.
