FATAL END OF AN ELOPEMENT.
No little surprise has been occasioned in the parish of St.
Like, Old-street, by the elopement of Mr Bacon, master of
the workhouse, and Mrs Walker, the workhouse school-
mistress, both of them married persons with families of
young children. Bacon obtained leave of absence for a
fortnight upon a plea of urgent private business to settle in
the country; and a few days after his departure, Mrs Walter
also obtained a leave of absence, alleging that her
mother was dangerously ill in Devonshire. It happened,
however, that soon afterwards her mother arrived, in good
health, in London, for the purpose of visiting her, and was
astonished to hear of her absence. This led to inquiry,
which resulted in the discovery that the missing pair were
together, intending to take flight to America. Walter, the
husband, who was the workhouse schoolmaster, had no op-
portunity of observing any of these movements, being in
the House of Correction for improper conduct to several
respectable females in the neighbourhood of the the workhouse.
Mrs Walter, a genteel and good looking woman, took with
her her youngest child, leaving the rest to her husband or
the parish. The relatives have ascertained beyond doubt,
that the pair embarked on board the Ocean Monarch, and,
together with the woman's child, perished when that ship
was destroyed.
