A MEAN TRICK. '
A charge of having obtained- money by
false pretences, Avas preferred against Heh
leigh Albert Westbury at Hawthorn court
'yesterday.
Henry Salway, garage proprietor, of
Bui wood-road, said that on lltli January
accused came lo him and said Mr. Cooke
a printer, by whom accused was em
ployed, had sent him to the railway sta
tion to obtain a parcel. Accused told
witness that he had to pay 4/3 freight be
fore lie could obtain delivery of the par
cel, and asked witness to advance him
this amount to save him going a long jour
ney back to his employer. Witness knew
Mr. Cooke, and advanced the money as
requested. .
Arthur Cook c, printer, of Burwood
road, said that accused for some time
had been m his employ before. Christmas.
Accused was not in witness's employ on
11th .Iijnuary, nor had witness authorised
accused to collect any parcel at the rail
way station.
The charge was rcduced to one of lar
ceny, and accused pleaded guilty.
Mr. Philpott, J.P.: It was a mean de
spicable trick.
Accused was sentenced to one month's
imprisonment, the sentence being suspen
ded on the usual conditions.
