Arrival at Beeehwortli.
I.EECin\ ORTH. — The Hume-Hovoll
centenary party, after leaving Myrtleford,
visited Whorcuily, where a concrete me
morial was unveiled by Sir J. Barrett,
and addresses were given by Mr. R. Cook!
M.P., and Messrs. Long and Greenwood.
district schools inspector. At Everton a
very well-constructed memorial was un
veiled in tho presence of about 400 resi
dents of the district. Cr. Diiley, of
Boecchworth shire, presided.
The party next proceeded to Murmun
gee, where the last memorial for the d.-iv
was unveiled. Cr. Ferguson, of Beech
worth shire, presided, and there was a

ated at the foot of tho picturesque Buck
land Gap, and is 14 feet high, with a
D-ioot square base, composed of rough
granite and cement, with a flagpole on
the top. It is placed actually on the
track ot Hume and . Hoevll whore they
broke through the Dingle rango. During
the day many 1 references were made
to the accuracy of maps prepared
by Mr. Hansford, of the Lands
department, which had enabled the
cairns to be properly placed. The party
drove up the Buckland Gap to Beeeh
wortli, where a civic reception was accord
ed them by Cr. H. H. Guv, shire presi
dent. Mr. L. H. Sambell, sliire secretary,
ropresntmg the Forward Beeehwortli
movement, also spoke. In replying, Sir
J. Barrett and Mr. Gates reminded thoso
present tbat.it was due to the co-operation
oi a 1 the shires through which the explor
ers had passed, and ot tho activity of the
Department of Public Instruction, tl)at
the movement was so successful. It hail
been initiated iu Becchworth bv the shire
council and District Inspector Grimwood,
to whom proper acknowledgment was
mnoe.
