HURRICANE IN WEST INDIES.
PLANTATIONS AND FRUIT CROPS
DAMAGED.
NEW YORK. 19th August.

Several members of the militia guarding
the Mexican border were injured, and one
was killed by lightning. The steamer Pilot
Boy was sunk in the Gulf of Mexico, and
the crew of twelve is missing.

as the telegraph lines are down.
The hurricane also passed over Jamaica.
The Governor has announced that the
damage done is far greater than was at first
estimated.. Bananas an'd other crops have
suffered, but tho sugar oane was not hurt.
The Government will assiflt the smaller
planters to repliant, and arrange wuth-fche

It is ea5d tliat the British authorities
had arranged to Bend two ships to carry
fruit to England, and ono prize ship to
carry fruit to Now York, but the hurricane
haa prevented this arrangement biing
carried out for the present season.
