THE LEVEE.
His Excellency Sir Charles Darling hold his first
levée as Governor of the colony in the Exhibition
Building yesterday afternoon. The interior of the
building was arranged much as on former occasions of
a like nature. At the east end, under the Royal arms,
a dais with scarlet valance and curtains was erected as
the place of reception ; and the opposite end was hung
with flags, the royal standard being suspended in front
of the organ. As the galleries are considered to be in-
secure, no one was admitted to them, but a considerable
number of ladies occupied benches provided for their
accommodation in the north aisle, the south aisle being
wholly occupied by gentlemen attending the levee. His
Excellency, who was escorted by a company of
the Prince of Wales Volunteer Light Ca-
valry, under Captain Scott, arrived shortly after
three o'clock, and was received by a company
of the Royal Artillery, under Captain Purcell, as a
guard of honor, the Immigrants' Home band playing
the National Anthem. As his Excellency alighted from
his carriage he was loudly cheered by a large concourse
who had assembled outside, and, before entering the
building, he turned and bowed his acknowledgements
of the demonstration. Having entered, his Excellency
proceeded up the centre of the hall, accompanied by
his private secretary, and took his place under the dais.

At the closo of the presentations, the very Rev. the
Vicar-General, accompanied by a number of the clergy
men of the Church of England, presented' the following
address ; —
' To his Excellency Sir Charles Henry Darling,
K.C.B., Governor of Victoria, &c. — Sir, — We, the vicar
general and clergy ot the Diocese of Melbourne,^ beg to
congratuluto your Excellency and Lady Darling on
your safe arrival, and cordially to welcome you to these
shores. Your Excellency is probably aware that, the
church in Victoria is placed in a very diflerent position
with regard to the stato from that which it occupies in
the British Isles ; but we bog to assure you that
altered circumstances produce no change in the
loyalty and devotion with which the church, both
hi her clergy aud laity, regard the throne and the
constitution, or in lior warm affection to tho person of
our Queen. It is no small part of the debt of gratitude
we owe to our beloved Sovereign that, those whom she
| has hitherto selected to govern this remote colony,
have been men as distinguished for their domestic
virtues, and the correctness of their moral and religious
character, as for tlvcir political ability ; aud we con
fidently hail the advent of your Excellency— not only
ns tlie chosen ritler of our infant Stale, but as the
future head and guide of our, as yet partially formed,
social system. In the prayer that God may grant your
Excellency's Government a still larger measure of
success than that which has marked t.lie administration
of your honored predecessors, and spare you aud your
family tho domestic sorrows which havo fallen on each
of them, we have the honor to be, your Excellency's
very laitMtl servants (signed on behalf of the clergy),
If. B. Macartney, Vicar-General.'
His IC.voi'.r.LEN'cv replied ns follows:—' To tiie Very
Rev. the Vicar-General and the Rev. tho Clergy of the
Diocesc of Jlelbourne. Very Rev. Sir nnd Rev. Gentle
men, — I request you to accept tho united thanks of
Lady Darling and myself for tho congratulations on
