OPENING DAY'S RESULTS.
T. A. JONES WINS HALF-MILE.
BURNIE, Wednesday. — The annual
New Year's carnival of the Burnie
'.Athletic Club was commenced to-day
in favorable weather. There were
about 2000 people present, and a
strong westerly wind blowing in the
face of the runners affected the times
considerably, and no outstanding per
formances were put up. In the D
grand band competitions, Collins
Vale was successful, and Devonport
won the D grade quickstep. The
sports wil! be concluded to-morrow.
The following are to-day's results. —

yards. Gatty and Lamont were then

At the gun the first time past the
I judge Fidler led from Lette with Pen
man, Gardiner, and the rest close up.
Going round Gardiner replaced Pen
man, otherwise the order past thc
judge was the same. The third time
past the post Fidler had command,
followed closely by Lette, Gardiner,
Beath and the rest of the field. TUis
order, was maintained till half wax
round, when Keefe came to the front
and won by half a wheel, with a
wheel separating second and thir;l,
and the rest were close up. Time,

A. Wells From the start to the
finish the race was a spectacular one,
and was -larked by some remarkable
features. The first dozen laps or so
were un ;rentful. The competitors
were we:: together, and the leaders
made par ; willing. Millington's tyre
punctured early in the race,
and ho was compelled to
withdraw. Wiien nearing the judge's
post in the 15th lap, W. Tvson
fell and brought down two other
riders, C.'ittendon and Hay. The
last-name: -rider sustained minor
bruises ard abrasions, but . the other
two esca; 2d injury, and the bikes
were not damaged. Hay retired from
the race, but C-rittendon and Tyson
resumed : :ding,\ neither with his feet
fastened .o the pedals. With four- :
teen laps to go, Johnson was making ;
the pace, followed ' by Thomas and
the rest of the field close up. At
ten to go Johnson was still at' the
head of Tie field, with Thomas and
Tyson r.c i. Johnson and . Thomas
led the fi3ld alternately for several
laps, and at three to go Gunton took
command, followed closely --y Beath
and Gardiner. There ware thou or.iv
11 of the 20 competitors who started
in the race stfll -riding. Atvthe bell
Gunton was still ahead cf the field,
followed by Beath, Tyson atid Crit
tendon, and 'there were then only. 7
left in the!race. Going round for the
last time Beath took command, and
he retained the position past the
judge's post, winning from Tyson by
a wheel. Half a wheel separated
second and third.' Time, 25min. 27
sec. Tyson and Crittendon were
loudly applauded f ot their perform
ances after having been handicapped
severely by their falls.
