CHURCH'S 1000th ANNIVERSARY.
Aa appeal is being issued-tor funds to re
store St. Alkraund's Church, Shrewsbury,
which tlus month entered upon its 1000th
ye^r. Founded by Eihclflcda. daughter of
■\ If red the Great, the church has passed
through many vicissitudes from its first, days,
when it had twelve canons or prebendaries,
with a dean and eleven manors. On the
site of Ethelfleda's foundation a beautiful
cruciform churcb rose during • the Middle
Ages, but all that is left of the old church
Is a delicate spire and" two panels of glass
Fifteen years ago the fabric was in a dan
gerous condition, and the congregation
which is very poor,-raised over £5000 to
wards its restoration. Only £1000 more i
required, and it is hoped that the millcnan
»*ext year will see the work completed
