LORD GLADSTONE APOLOCiSES
Sir George Farrar, Bart., chairman
of the Fast Rand Proprietary Mines,
recently protested against a statement
made hy Viscount Gladstone, Governor
General of South Africa, to the effect
that the mine owners on July 5 (when
tiie great riots were in progress) de
clined to enter Johannesburg for the
purpose of conferring with General
Botha and Mr. J. C. Smuts. Lord
Gladstone has now withdrawn and
apologised for the statement. The Go
vernor-General added that lie has learnt
that tho mine owners were present in
Johannesburg on the day in question,
hut owing to the disorder then pre
vailing in tho city the Ministers de
cided to hold the conference at Orange
Grove.
