FEDERAL PATENT COMMIS
SIONEBSHIP.
Tlio claims of Mr. G. H. Neighbour for
the position of Fcdoral Patents Commis
sioner wc-re brought before the Minister
of. Customs to-day by a deputation from
the patent agents of Melbourne. It was
represented that Mr. Neighbour, who is
at present Chief Clerk of the Supreme
Court., is the best available man for the
position, ho being both a barrister and a
scientist. It was, however, said tliat tlio
salary of £800 was not sufficient to induce1
him to apply. Regarding the minor posi
tions, it was thought that suitable men
could ouly bo found in the Sydney Patent
Office. Sir William Lyno was not able to
inform tlio deputation wlion tlioi act
would bo brought into operation, and in
this matter the Minister would be guided
by the advice of tho Commissioner. He
had a conversation witli the Commissioner
of Public Service in regard to the ap
pointment, and that gentleman could bo
,reliod on to do what was right and
proper. He thought a good man ought to
be proourablo for £800 per annum. He
did not think it essential that the posi
tion should bo filled by a barrister, so
loug as he was of good so'md common
sense, had organising ability, practical ex
perience, and the strength to say no.
Red-tapeism in any form should be
avoided and inventors treated with every
consideration. He would carefully con
sider the views which had been placed be
fore him.
