THE PIG QUESTION:.
To THIS EOXTOlt.
Bin,—It has afforded mo a deal of
satisfaction to find the establishment* *
buch an institution in our midst its the, •<
Ratepayers' Defence Association, hud it
is certainly hoped that it will hare a long
aud useful career, Conducted on proper
lines and principles its work should be
attended with good mauls. It appears
to have met with opposition hi certaih
quarters but I feel sure that 'thfise nt. .
present opposed to it will recognise 'it8'<>'
power in the town and if carried oh as it
should be extend to it every support. I-;
trust that its executive will eUdeavonr
to banish all thoughts ot litigation >
unless when really necessary, 4 ifnd
resort to other tactics whereby to hare -
matters righted. It cannot be expected
that our Councillors in discharging thbif
duties at all times will give satisfaction,
but when arbitrary and unnecessary
measures are introduced by that body I
think the Association should step in
and assert its rights by argument and a.
representation of plain facts.
I am of opinion that this Association
can very well extend its sphere ofueb
fulness by embracing for discussion
various other than municipal matters-,1
and in doing so 'should certainly inake'<
itself felt in our midst. The business of^
the meetings he'd {[should be inadiT
publicly kuown thus giving non
atteuders an apportunity of becoming
acquainted with the work conducted.
It should do its utmost to prevent strife
amongst us which I regret to say al- .
ready has shewn itself m various circles, >.
and to my mind has been a prominent"*
factor hitherto In keeping the plyft
back. If it is so wished everything cau
be amicably arranged and it only rests : ?
with those concerned to have, thia;
brought abont.
a well-wisher, s " ®
