A large crowd saw Houghton defeat
Gumeracha by one point in the second
semi-final at Bird wood on a ground
which the overnight rain had made
just right tor football.
Gumeracha combined very well and
their attacks left Houghton back men
all at eea, thus allowing them to
whites swept in again and pat on 3
opened their account. The black and
whites swept in again and pat on 3
more goals before the first bell, the
scores then being Gumeracha 6—1,
Houghton 1—2. Best men for Gum
eracha were Cornish, K. Sandercock,
Hannaford and Hanna, while D. Al
corn, Brealey, Schultz and Carpenter
were under notice for Houghton.
Houghton attacked determinedly in
the next quarter and scored 4—4 to
3—3 by Gumeracha, play seesawing
with Houghton gradually finding their
feet and their men. Half-time saw
Gumeracha 9—4 to Houghton 5—6
and very few gave Houghton much
chance of victory.
However, in the third term D. Alcorn
and Drury went to the back line and
played so well that they dominated
the play, ably backed by their team
mates, and prevented Gumeracha
from scoring at all while Houghton
scored 3—3 and brought the scores
to- Gumeracha 9—4, Houghton 8—9,
and making it anyone's game.
Houghton attacked from the bounce
and scored a goal which put them in
the lead. Gumeracha retaliated with
two points* before again goaling.
Houghton equalled with a free given
by Gumeracha backmen who were
doing this too often with dire results
for them. Play swung from one end
to the other with goal being scored
for goal amidst much excitement,
players giving all they had. Brealey
goaled for Houghton from a disputed
free, to put Houghton 1 point in the
lead. Gumeracha had the ball and
were pressing forward when the flna1
bell rang with them one point in ar
rears, and allowing Houghton once
more to go straight to the grand
final.
