Kilting Strops.—At an inquest held
in Melbourne on Monday on the body of
a- child who had died aftter taking a dose
of " Mrs. Winelow's soothing syrup," the
medical evidence disclosed the cause of
death to be inflammation of the lungs ac
celerated by the syrap, which contained a
certain proportion of opium. The coron
er Bfcated that it was his intention to com
municate with the Commissioner of Cus
toms, recommending the prohibition of
the importation of "WinsLow's soothing
syrup," which be believed had caused the
death of a number of children. The Gov
ernment analyst, who was called as a wit
ness, stated he had analysed the syrup,
and found ft ^contained a considerable
quantity of opium, the effoot of whioh
on children whosB lungs or other organs
were imflamed was most deadly.
D. McGiluvray y. Butcher .—An
application was madein ohambersat Mount
Gambior yesterday before Mr. J. P. Stow,
S. M., to set aside the judgment lately re
Corded at the Robe Court in this caBe. The
action was one for £12 for stabling and
maintenance of the racehorse Sir Thomas,
and defendant's was held to have heen
1 informal, as the case was brought on by
special summons, Mr. A. J. Davies ap
peared for the" defendant, and the ground
of his application for a new trial was that
'the spaoial summous had been improperly
issued. Mr. Daniel showed cause on be
half of the plaintiff. After hearing the
' arguments the S.M. granted a now trial,
the oost of both trials to be oosta in
cause.—8. S. Star.
