LEAGUE FOOTBALL
By "Paloma'
"CTEATURES of Saturday's football
were the overwhelming defeat of
Richmond by Melbourne, the downing
of the hitherto undefeated Geelong by
the weakened Collingwood side, and
Fitzroy's victory over Carlton. Rich
mond were outclassed from the bounce
of the ball, and In the third quarter the
game had developed into merely a pleas
ant practice match for the Red Legs,
who were not only outpacing the
"Tigers," but were also' more than hold
ing their own with them in the air.
With Bert Chadwlck well enough to
play again next Saturday, the Fuchsias
will be one of the most formidable com
binations in the competition.
Although Collingwood had such men
as Wilson, Shanahan and Cheswass out
of their side,* they nevertheless jour
neyed down to the fateful Pivot and
covered themselves with glory by re
turning home with the bacon. To the
League football teams Geelong is looked
upon as an Australian counterpart of
the Bight of Benin, from whence "one
comes out where a hundred go in," and
although the followers of Ford do not
cheerfully clump the innocent visitor
on the pate and then retain the body as
a keepsake as do their brothers under
the skin way out in Benin, yet they
appear to place some horrible hoodoo
over the luckless eighteen that would
wrest a match from them, and it is a
sadder, but not the whit wiser, body of
men who afterwards sip a joyless tea at
one of Mr Clapp's much-condemned
hostelrles. But the 'Woodsmen seemed
to be hoodoo proof, for they routed the
"seagulls" and won out with seven
points to the good.
Fitzroy gave promise of regaining
some of their lost prestige by conquer
ing the improved Carltonians, whilst
South Melbourne squeezed home from
North Melbourne by two points. North
are particularly unlucky in the nar
rowness of their defeats this season. By
downing St. ICilda Essendon remain the
only unvanquished team, and Footscray
won their first match of the year at the
expense of Hawthorn.
Next Saturday's Matches
rrHE attraction for next Saturday will
be the meeting of Richmond and
Geelong at Richmond, and, although
both teams suffered reverses in their
last engagements, the game should be
a thriller, Carlton may be the cause
of spoiling Essendon's enviable record,
whilst South Melbourne should put up
a strong opposition to Collingwood at
Victoria Park. It would not occasion
overmuch surprise if North were to
overthrow Fitzroy, and Melbourne must
not consider Footscray as an easy
match. St, Ivilda will be at home to
Hawthorn,
Monday's Games
rpHE full round of matches will be
played on King's Birthday, when a
huge crowd should journey to the
Pivot to see the meeting of Geelong and
Essendon. If both these teams win
their matches on the Saturday their en
counter will be particularly attractive.
The St. Kilda-Collingwood engagement
will be well attended, as also will the
Melbourne-South clash on the M.C.C.
North, Fitzroy and Footscray are at
home respectively to Richmond, Haw
thorn and Carlton.
