j Anglicans Not Catholics. I
Is it truo that tho Church of England is a
breakaway from tho true Catholic re
ligion?
Yes.
* * *
In what way Is tho Church of England con
nected with tho Catholic Church?
Iii no way at all. It is as distinct and
separate from the Catholic Church as
the Plymouth Brethren, the Primitive
Baptists, or any other Protestant body.
We Anglicans say In tho Apostles' Creed,
'I believe In tho Holy Catholic Church.'
It does not follow that you are there
fore Catholics, or that your church is
part of the Catholic Church. You see,
the Anglican Church broke away from
the Catholic Church, and has never re
turned to it. And it can't break away
from the Catholic Church, yet still claim
to belong to it. When America seceded
from England, it at lfjast did not pretend
to be still part of the British Empire. It
ia tvno nmnno-af tho 'Pnmilv
papers' which the Church of England
took with it on its departure was the
'Apostles' Creed.' And in reciting that
Creed 'Anglicans still say, 'I believe in
tlie Holy Catholic Church.' But this
repetition of a formula can no more
make them Catholics than the repetition
of the words, 'I believe in America'
could make you an American citizen.
You see, it's not a question of what a
man 'says,' but of what he 'is.' And
Anglicans are not Catholics. The Creed
should remind them that they ought to
become Catholics by joining the Church
from which their forefathers got the
Creed, and from which those forefathers
should never have deDarted.
