TVEST WALLSEND.
SOCIAL AND PRESENTATION.
A pleasing event took place in the local
U.M.F. Church last Wednesday night, the
occasion being the presentation to Mr. and
Mrs. F. Smith of a handsomely-boundfamily
Bible by some friends and,.members of the
choir for the valuable services rendered to the
church by them. ~0e Bbv. G. B. Black,
pastor of the church, presided, the first part
of the evening being spent in harmony, dur
ing which the Rev. G. B. Black gave an ex
cellent address in which he enlogised Mr.
and Mrs. Smith for the able help they had
rendered to the church for many years
past, and hoped they would not
loose their valuable assistance in the future.
*The rev. gentleman then, on behalf of those
present, presented Mr. and Mrs. Smith with
the handsomely-bound volume. Mr. Smith in
responding thanked them very kindly for the
handsome and useful present they had given
them, and accepted the present, in the same
spirit in which it was given, and trusted that
he and Mrs. Smith would long continue to
retain the good feeling so practically ex
hibited by his many friends. They had been
greatly surprised at being made the reci
pients of so handsome a gift, and he could
promise them that they would continue in the
future as they had been in the past, and
hoped the church would prosper. Cake and
tea were then served round0 after which par.
hour games were indulged in until a late
hour, everyone, enjoying themselves im
mensely.
SOOIAL UNION.
The Seaham and West Wallsend Colliery
surfacemin and shiftmen having formed
themselves recently into a sacial club, met in
Sharp's Hotel on Saturday evening, and
during the meeting it was decided toinauglar
ate the society by holding a picnic andexcur'
sion to Lake 3lacquarie at an early date.
Arrangements are adready in hand at the
present time, and when the date is definitely
fixed due notice will be given in the press.

The local lodge of Good Templars held its
weekly meeting on Thursday erening in the
Presbyterian Church, there beircir a fair at
tcndarre. After three candidares had been
irritiated and welcomed into the Order, ar
rrengements were made to invite the* Rov. G.
, Black to deliver a terrlmrance .ddress at
ano rrly date. I-armony was then indulged
in for the remainder of the ecening, everyone
present assisting to make the gathering enjoy
themselvs. During tie past three months
this lodge has doubled its membership, and
bids frirr to doing a deal of good in the town.
