THE EXHII~J[TS.
The live stock in the show is, on the Whole,
very fair, the horses and cattle being good,
but the sheep and pigs very few in number,
and by no means up to the standard which
should reign in the Hunter River district. In
horses, the entries number about 260, the
cart-horses being exceptionally good. The
well-known thoroughbred horse Nanri.
gator won the prize for the best blood etal.
lion, and also carried off the champion
medal. There were five entries in this class.
A very nice two.year.old chestnut colt named
Chandos, by Splender (imp.), exhibited by
Mr. Daniel Newton, was awarded the prizc
for the best blood stallion under three years.
In the blood ye.rling stock, the Hen. J. N.
Brunker's colt, by Navigator-Scintilla, was
awarded first prize, beating four other good
animals. Whisper Low won the medal for
the best blood mare, and Mr. L. Graham's
Young Ringmaster carried off the prize
for the best coaching stallion over four years
old; the well-known Harkaway receiving the
blue ribbon for the best roadster stallion.
The heavy draught stock was very good, the
ohampion medal being carried off by Mr.
8. J. Foot's Gladstone (imp.), a magnificent
stallion, three years old. For the best heavy
stallion over tour years, Mr. Foot's Lord
Arthur Cecil (imp.) was declared the best,
but he was beaten by the younger animal in
the champion class. Mr. A. Davies' well.
known br o I mare Dinth won the prize in her
class, and also the champion medal for the
best heavy mare in the yard, over four
years.
The show of cattle wasee very good,
especially in the fat bullocks, and the
Durham and Heroford classes. Sheop were
not well represented, and the same applies
to pigs, only fifteen very indifferent animals
being shown, the best being some ropresenta?
tives of the Essoex breed. There was a
splendid display of poultry, there being
221 entries. There were also a great
many pigeons and canaries on view, while
ducks, geese, and others of the feathered
tribe wore represented in the special
pavilion. The show of dogs was perhaps the
best that has been seen in the district for
many years, the entries numbering 106.
Competition was keenest in the greyhound
and terrier classes, and several fine animals
were shown.
In the fine arts exhibition entries were
very numerous, the prize for the best
oil painting being awarded to Mr. A. B.
White, Miss eIsabel Matthews being seeond
with a view of the Burwood lagoon. Miss
Owtram carried off a great many prizes for
painting on plaques, while the chief ex
hibitors in all the classes were pupils from
the public and private schools in the
Northern district. Miss Ethel Talbot, of
this city, won the first prize for the best
drawing of an animal's head, her picture of
a Newfoundland dog being very good. The
pupils of the Thalala public school were
most successful, and they deserve every
credit, a pupil named R. V. King winning
several prizes. As extra exhibits,
Mr. Alfred Sharp had several very
fine works on view; while Mrs. Griflith, Mr.
W. T. Poulton, Mr. W. N. Smyth, and
W. Aldenhoven exhibited a great many fine
pictures. A feature of the show may be said
to be the exhibition of amateur cooking, to be
seon in the produce pavilion. Every year
the entries in these classes vastly increase,
and it is a good sign, as good cooking means
the fostering of good digestions, and good
digestions certainly go a long way to make a
prosperous and contented nation. On the
whole, the show is the most successful yet
hold by the association, and should the
weather be favourable to-day, 10,000 people
will in all probability be present. The sum
of £143 was taken yesterday at the gates,
which is the largest amount yet received for
the first day, as the public usually patroniso
the exlhbition on the second day. A jump
ing contest for a line trophy was commenced
yesterday, ten horses competing. The jump
ing was very much admired by the Governor,
and the prizes will be awarded to-day. Mr. J.
R. Wood, of this city, carried off the prize for
the bestpair of carriage horses on the ground,
the two well-known black animals being
worthy of a prize in any show. There were
about 200 people from this distriot at tho
show yesterday, and as ten times that number
are expected today, special trains have been
placed to run at suitable hours. Among the
exhibitors of canaries at the show is Mr. T.
O. Wrightson, of Newcastle, who carried off
a great many prizes. In pigeons, Mr. W. H.
Moxey and Mr. J. Witten were well to the
fore, and their birds were fairly successful,
while not a few prizes for fowls came down
the line, Mr. W. Baker and a few others
seouring the blue ribbons. The following
