COMPETITION RESULTS.
CLASSIL
| Junior competitors have again worired very troll
hi all three competition subjects, and drawing,
verso, and prose have each revealed bright ideas;
and painstaking efforts. In drawing, the three
best pictures tor "in Wintry Weather" were the
work ot prize-winners of two months past, and
Joan Pitman, Viola Lorkin, and Anne Turnbull
have each entered pictures showing work which
equals any which has yet won success for them.
The first prize passes to Bon Hack, whose Idea is
good and carried out with a dainty touch, though
the details are a little too finely drawn for suc
cessful reproduction in the Y.F.P. Aa second
prize winner the youngest of our drawing qpn
petitors has been chosen for the very good com
parison her work shows with that of other com
petitors, who have had as much as four years'
more of practice, in verse, again, the most suc
cessful^ entry is a too recent prize-winner,
and Alice llland taxes only a certificate with her
charming lines carrying out a pretty fairy fancy.
Many other nice little poems were written in
much Ibe same vein as those which win lor Noreen
Omant the first prize, but it is the touch of
originality in thought that has given Margaret
Body second verse honours, though her lines ate
not quite as smooth and properly balanced as
they might he.
I In the prose competition essays are very few
indeed, and of two which" might have reached the
prize list that by Geoff. Turner was much too
short, while Joan Martyr, while writing very well,
chose a subject so much like a school lesson as to
be dull reading. Two creditable little stories
win the prose honours, and -when we consider how
| big a task it is to plan, begin, and continue and
finally to end up a story clearly, the little writers
of 13 years show themselves as very earnest and
persevering in overcoming the difficulties of
aulhonhip.
