King O'Ma~plley
Dead At 99
Mr. King O'Malley, last surviving
member of Australia's first Common
wealth Parliament, died suddenly at his
home at Albert Park, Melbourne, late
yesterday afternoon.
Mr. O'Malley was aged
99.
He was the founder of
the Commonwealth Bank
and played a big part in
establishing Canberra as the
national capital.
He was one of the most
colourful figures in Australian
politics in the earlier days oil
Federation.
Mr. O'Malley was married
twice., His second wife sur
vives him.
He will be given a State
funeral. -
On behalf of the Labour
movement, the Leader of the
Federal Opposition (Dr. Evatt)
paid a tribute to Mvlr. O'Malley
in Sydney to-night.
"He was a remarkable man,
Dr. Evatt said. "He devoted
himself during the famous
regime of the Fisher Govern
ment to projects and enter
prises which have since be
come recognised as bulwarks
of Australian nationhood.
"He was closely associated
with the pioneer days of the
Commonwealth Bank. He was
associated with the early plan
ning of the national capital
and with that great and sue
cessful enterprise, the trans
continental railway.
"In his old age he remained
fervently devoted to the ideals
of the Labour movement, and
he had an abiding faiih in the
great destiny of Australia."
Sir Robert Garran, the first;i
Commonwealth Solicitor-Gen
eral, said in Canberra that
Mr. O'Malley often did not
see eye to eye with depart
mental heads, and expressed
himself in lurid language, but
departmental officers liked and
respected him.
