LAWN TENNIS JOTTINGS
By PYTHIAS.
A match between Melbourne and South Yarra can
alwavs be looked to to provide a good game and
an exciting finish, and that of last Saturday waB
far from being; an exception. The spectators, some
couple of hundred in number, who lined the courts
had little to complain of in the quality of the
game provided for them to witness. Those who
came early were well rewarded, for some of the
best play in the day was to be seen in the opening
rubber, between Diddams and Dunlop (M.C.C.) and
Alec. Chomley and Brookes (S.Y.). From the
start Uie South Yarra pair took the upper hand,
aided by the difficulty Diddaras for a long time
found in getting a good length, and by some bril
liant and consistent play on the part of Chomley,
who was showing far and away the best form of the
four, and after winning the first set took the
score to 4-1 in the next, and should have vfon the
game following. With an equal mixture of good
luck and good play the Melbourne pair extricated
themselves from what looked, at one time, ab
solutely certain defeat, and, winning the Get, took
the final Bet as well from their opponents, who
tired perceptibly. A. A. Cbomley and Waters
(M.O.O.) began well against Tatchell and Frascr
(S.Y.), but with the score at two games all
Waters fell heavily, and thereafter played some
wliat wildly and without precision; aud Chomley,
without strong support, could make no headway
against the South Yarra pair, who won the easiest i
of rubbers by two sets straight to two games in
each case. Resuming after tlie interval, Tatchell
and Kniser continued against Dunlop and Diddams, I
I end were only beaten after a close and prolonged
struggle, in which Fraser, perhaps, allowed the
most consistent form. It required three sets, and
the last a vantage set, before the Melbourne pair
took the rubber. After Chomley and Waters liad
lost their first set at 6-i to Alee. Chomley and
Brookes, the game seemed lost to the home team
beyond redemption. The junior Melbourne pair, :
however, buckled to in real earnest, and, playing
their best gtune this season, won the second set
to one game, before either Chomley or Brookes
could get going'. In the final set, on wliich the
result of the whole match rested, the score
mounted game by game till four all was called,
when, amidst a scene of great excitement, the Mel
bourne pair came away aud won. (
Albert-park tempted disaster by taking a weak
team to Malvern, for Spencc was absent from their
ride, his place being filled fay Timms, a recruit
from their second four. Hunks to Irving and
Barnard, who won two sets straight against each
of the Malvern pairs, the match was won by Albert
park, for Baynee and Timms, while unable to* win ?
a rubber, nevertheless won a couple of sets during !
the afternoon, sufficient to turn the balance in I
favour of their.side. For Albert-park, Irving and '
Barnard played well, Bayncs steadily, and Timing j
justified his elevation by playing a veiy meritorious t
game. The Chriam were not as good as usual, I
while Mcares and Heath, though outclassed by j
Irving and Barnard, showed fair form against
Bayncs and TimmB. Albert-park were distinctly
, lucky to get off so lightly, ana, in any case, a two
set victory is hardly a safe margin to work
upon.
I have not the scores of the VTindsor-Kow match
| before me, but 1 am informed that Kew won three
rubbers, and went nigh to winning the fourth, .
j result on which they are to be heartily congratu
lated, although, for the first time this season, it
, belied my forecast. With last Saturday's matches
ended the first round of the competition, leaving
Albert-park and Melbourne with one defeat each
out of six matches played at the bead ot the list.
I South Tan* and University follow with two defeat*
apiece; Malvern have been beaten four times, Kew
[five, and Windsor-poor Windsor-can pride them
selves on their consistency alone, since their carter
this season presents an unbroken line of defeats. ..
To-day the singles b«in, and a good match U
provided right awsyjn tie tie between South Yarra
and Albert-parte. Tbe former are the better team
I fancy, but the peculiarities of (he Albert-park
courts will minimise, tf not altogether take away,
the advantage of the home team. To mune one
club, I- plump Mr South Tarn, albeit in fear and
trembling. Ualvern should beat Windsor, and lid
bourne have an essy time of it ag&fiwt Kew.
