SOCIAL NOTES.
The members of the Geelong Lawn Tennis
Club save a performance, "On 'Change,"
on Saturday, in the Mechanics' Insti
tute, in the presence of a large
audience. Those who took part were
Mies C. L. Bell, Miss B. Harvood, Mrs.
Langhonle, Miss E. H. Morrison, Mr. IX
Straelian, Mr. Walter H. Smith, Mr. Conran,
Mr. J. F. Guthrie, Mr. Neil Campbell, Mr. F.
Moore, and Mr. S. Calvert. The oomedy went
veijr well, the players all being letter-perfect
The applause was frequent and hearty, and
the ladies wen presented with numberless
floral offerings.
On Monday evening, March 30, Mr. and
Mrs. Arthur Bayley gave a dinner party at
the homestead on their Avenel Estate. About
25 guests sat down, amongst whom were
Mr. and Mre. Thomas Bayley Mr. Jno.
Bayley, Mr. and Mis. Crotty, Miss Chappie
(Brighton), Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Gleeson, Mr.

Mr. and Mrs. John Cooke, who are staying
at the Grand Hotel, Melbourne, will leave for
England by the Himalaya on Saturday, April
18.
Mr. Archibald H. Mitford (late 71st High
landers) and Mrs. Mitford have arrived by the
Oceana, from London, on a visit to Australia,
where they have friends. They are staying
at Menzies',
At the second drawingroom held by the
Countess Cadogan at Dublin Ciastle on Wed
nesday, February 26, Miss Liia Ibbotson,
eldest daughter of Mr. Alfred Ibbotson, was
presented, and wore a dress of white
duchesse satin, trimmed with lilies of die
valley and old Brussels laoe, court train of
white brorauie, and carried a bouquet of lilies
of the valley. Mrs, Alfred Ibbotaon and hex
daughters have been travelling abroad for
the past two years, and when In Melbourne
lived at Mymong, Toorak, rented by Mr.
Ibbotson from Mr. Robert Power.
The Easter Carnival in aid of St. Mary's
Roman Catholic Church, North Melbourne,
was opened by the Mayor, Councillor Fogarty,
in the local Town-hall on Easter Monday.
The lam andienoe were reminded by the
mayo* that the object of Hie biaaar was to
liquidate the debt of £8,000 on their beautiful
church, for which their energetic oleigyman,
the m P. J. Aylward, had. made
himself personally responsible. There are
eight stalls, presided over by the following

An exciting cricket match took place on i
Good Friday, at Nerrin Nerrin Estate, be
tween Terinallam and Nerrin Nerrin teams.
It was a great success, doe to the lively
interest the people of the district took in the
game and to the hospitality of Mr. and Mrs.
Wm. MacPhereon. The perfect weather
added mach to everyone's pleasure. The
fNerrin Nerrin team went in first,
and Mr. Kiasling made the splendid
score of 118. At 2 o'clock lunch was
served in samptaous style to about
100 people in the well-shaded Avenue.
Play was afterwards resumed, the match
ending in a victory to the Nerrin Nerrin
team by 57 runs. The teams were

The half-yearly sale in connection with the
Gentlewoman's Aid Society will be held in
the Prahran Town-hall, Chapel-street, on
Wednesday, May 6. Lady Sargood has con
sented to open it at 3 o'clock, and Lady
Benjamin, Lady Snowden, and others
of the patronesses, will have stalls and dis
pose of the work of the poor members con
nected with it.
The Kew Festival, in aid of the Roman
Catholic Church and Presbytery at Kew, was
opened at the Recreation-hall on Easter Mon
day by tbe Consul-General of the United
States, Mr. D. W. Maratta, who was received
by Rev. P. O'Donohoe, pastor of the mission.
There was a large attendance. There were
two large stalls in which, fancy work, under
the direction of the Children of Mary and of
Mesdames Maher and Crotty and Miss
O'Neill, is displayed. The refreshment stall
was conducted by Mesdames Kennedy and
Sheehan. The hall was decorated with flags
and art muslin. One of the chief attractions
of the bazaar is an extension-top family
buggy, the gift of Mr. Lonergan, to be dis
posed of by art union.
