Lambton Council met last evening,
there being present Aldermen Charl
ton (Mayor), Jarrett, Fitzpatrick, Ag
new, Lightfoot, Spruce, Box, and Bell.
Correspondence was received from
F. Croudace, forwarding the S.A.M.
Company's cheque for £517 3s 1d, rep-
resenting the company's rates, less
£100 deducted, representing the rates
in land which the company had given
as a public park at Jesmond.--Waratah
Council, forwarding copy of letter ad-
dressed to the Minister in connection
with the Greater Newcastle scheme,
and also asking council to urge the
Minlster for Local Government to de-
for the reference to the ratepayers
until arrangements had been made for
the convening of a conference to con-
sider the council's alternate scheme.
On the motion of Alderman Charlton,
it was agreed to co-operate. He
thought the ratepayers should have a
voice in any counter scheme.-O. Jen
kins, drawing attention to the state of
Young-road. Some time ago the coun
cil passed a resolution authorising
the expenditure of £100 on the road,
and he thought it would be a wise pol-
icy to proceed with the work before
the winter set In. The Mayor said
that the work would be proceeded with
when material was available.--From
the electrical engineer, Newcastle
Council, stating the lamps in Elder-
street were 18ft from the road level,
and lowering them might slightly im
prove the lighting under the balconies
and on the footpaths immediately ad
jacent to the lamps. The efficiency of
the lighting of the road and foot
paths midway between lamps would be
greatly reduced.-Secretary, Jesmond
Tennls Club, stating that the club ap
proved of the site for proposed tennis
court selected by the park-keeper
in the Jesmond Park. The
Mayor intimated that the park
keeper would be instructed
to peg out the ground.-
A . J. Nolan and others, asking council
to erect a lamp at the gate leading into
the park at the eastern side of the bowl
ing green. This matter was dealt with
in connection with the following minute
submitted by the Mayor: (1) That a light
be placed in Mary-street, Jesmond, at a
point not exceeding 110 yards from the
corner of Ralph-street; (2) that one
light be placed In "Wyong-road, not ex
ceeding 110 yards from Orlando-road
(3) that a light be placed at the corner
of Thana and Young road, and the last
light in Young-road be removed to the
boundary, and the New Lambton Council
be asked to pay half cost; (4) that two
lights be placed in Jesmond Park to
light up the main thoroughfare to the
tram stopping place, the position to be
decided on the completion of the dedica
tion of the land, and that the Railway
Commissioners be requested to pay half
cost of the lamp at the tram stopping
(5) that a lamp be placed in the park
at the entrance of the Karoola-road gate;
(6) that a lamp be placed midway be
tween Wyee-road and Church-street
south side of the tramline. Alderman
Charlton said he was not prepared to
vote on the motion until he was sure
whether New Lambton Council and the
Commissioners would contribute to the
cost of the lamps mentioned in the re
port. Alderman Spruce said he was pre
pared to move that six additional lamps
be installed in the eastern part of the
municipality. The ratepayers in Griffith-
town had no lights, and had paid the
rates since the electric light had been
installed. He thought consideration of
the lights in the Jesmond Park could
well stand over until the land was fin
ally dedicated. Alderman Lightfoot fav
oured the suggestion of Alderman
Charlton that the matter stand over,
which was carried.
On the motion of Alderman Fitzpatrick
it was decided to ask the co-operation of
the Wallsend and New Lambton Councils
to again approach the Government re
garding a special grant for the Jesmond
Park. On the suggestion of Alderman
Ball, the council agreed to ask for a
special grant of £150 for the repair of
the main road. Alderman Agnew referred
to delays in the delivery of telegrams. He
mentioned an instance in which a tele
gram had been sent from Sydney at 10.30
a.m., and was not delivered until 5.10
in the afternoon. It was decided to bring
the matter under the notice of the postal
authorities.
The Mayor said he had been approach
ed by the police to know what was the
council's views of Sunday games, which
were being played in the lower end of
the park. Personally he was totally
against games being played on a Sun
day. Aldermen Spruce and Bell said
there was plenty of room for complaint,
and unless stopped it would soon be a
general thing. Bad language was used,
which could be heard from the public
road. Aldermen Charlton, Jarrett,
Spruce and Lightfoot expressed them
selves against Sunday playing in the
park. Aldermen Fitzpatrick and Agnew
said they could see no harm in kicking
a football in the park on a Sunday. They
were, however, against any rowdism, and
bad language. They thought It would be
time for the council to give an expres
sion of opinion when an application was
made for games to be played on a Sun
day. The council decided to ask the po
lice to assist in preventing games being
played in any portion of the park on Sun
days.
The town clerk reported that the re
ceipts for March were £803 8s 6d. The
ranger reported that five premises were
connected to the sewers during March,
making a total of 322. A building per
mit was granted to W. Jarrett to erect a
cottage in Young-street at a cost of £475.
